Oh, I'm not absolving him. It's just interesting that in his day he was considered quite extreme but was nothing compared to those of today. He was pro-choice, against keeping? gays out of the military, etc. More of a 'libertarian' type I suppose but, again, he pales in comparison to today's 'libertarians'. Sadly, even? Goldwater set the stage for later crazies by not denouncing them early on in his own campaign. I find it funny that Goldwater waited until well after his days in public office were over before he said anything about the Religious Right. He had his opportunity to say something when saying something would have meant something. Silence for the sake of convenience is a Washington insiders' stock in trade. Democracy was new at the time and new things have risks. It was also seen to be more specific (direct democracy) than it is now. I can let them get away with having undemocratic views (hell i'm sceptical of what democracy meant back then) because they didn't have the evidence we do now. The constitution wasn't voted for by everyone. They were humans - very good ones for their time but of their time - with mistakes like anyone. Other lawmakers and leaders are made of? the same stuff as them, with the benefit of added education as the world evolved. It must be remembered the founders broke the law and constitution of the time, to make their own constitution. These things are never meant to last forever and they knew and said it. Those who pay lip-service to the constitution read it the least. They act like the entire US Code should be replaced with half the Bill of rights. I had one say murder should be legal, because nothing in the constitution says it should be illegal; this is extreme, but it's what their "if it isn't in the constitution it's illegal" reading leads to, logically. The country has been at it's most powerful and prosperous since it started reading it as "if it doesn't exclude it it's? legal"

The point I was trying to make in this video is that libertarians and many self-described conservatives don't give to charity to be charitable but so as to use those private charities as means to make money through tax write-offs. Conservative politicians certainly? don't. Unregulated direct democracy might fit the free market ideology, if not more traditional conservative brands. Democracy is vague enough that some forms will fit almost anyone. I'm proof not everyone on the left likes some forms of it in it's pure "mob rule" form; the 'wolf and sheep' problem applies to voting, but also to markets! A little regulation is needed for both and it's THAT that the GOP hates, complicated systems with loads of rules.

Whereas in much of? the world poor people recognize their own plight, here in the US people from the working poor see themselves as rich people in the middle of a slump. I live in a heavily red state as well, there are two counties that always go blue. One because it is in a large metro area & the other because it is the county where the largest state university is located (about 30,000 students). I don't? know much about the details of modern Alabama politics other than it's heavily Republican, but one thing from Alabama you should certainly be proud of: Harper Lee. I'd be hard pressed to name my favorite book, but To Kill a Mockingbird would be among them.

One of the most common arguments I hear from Paultards when I justly castigate their messiah on? his position regarding old age pensions is that Ron Paul wants to keep Social Security around for those who are currently on it. They continue by saying that Paul just intends to phase it out completely over the next 20 years. They miss the point entirely! It's not how he intends to get rid of it that scares me! It's the fact that he actually intends to get rid of at all!

I'll continue to make sure that libertarian and Austrian School spammers/trolls are dealt with accordingly. Again, I made this video on the spur of the moment so I didn't have any sources handy other than a Mother Jones article on Ron Paul's ex-aid Steward Rhodes and his influence within the Right-Wing militia. When challenged on this hypocrisy, many libertarians use the cop-out argument "This is the money I paid into the system!" This argument completely ignores the fact that it's not their money they're receiving! The govt assistance they hypocritically take is from the commons. Part of the problem with American culture is that there are so many who are poor who don't see themselves that way. In America, many poor people see themselves as rich people who are on temporary hiatus. American culture is part of the problem.
