There is something to be said for "balance", and levellers of the playing field in a time of rampant corruption in every sector, in every way. Then again...it's been that way since day one. I am confused as to the logic behind you opening statement. Paraphrasing as I've been drinking! "Unions are responsible for many things we take for granted today. Weekends, overtime, etc.. However, they've become to big and too powerful." This line of reasoning begs the? question. Are corporations and/or businesses too big and too powerful? The problem is that most companies? view employees as machines. Especially if the company is large. I'm an organizer for a non tenure-track faculty union. We go out and talk to our members, hear their issues, get to know them. We LISTEN. Depending on the department, most University administrators/deans/chairs could care less what an instructor has to say or what they care about. They probably care even less if they're on a semester appointment. I imagine its worse in the private sector.

thank you sir, I appreciate your input in this. I was in a union in the 70's, things sure have changed since? then, very aggressive now. I am a small business owner and actually checked with the local to see how to become a union shop myself for business opportunities, the cost was too great and employees were not interested at all. i think if company owners treat their employees fairly to begin with, they would be no call for unions at all. My employees are happy with their job!

As a former Union Member, former Union? shop steward and former Union local treasurer I can tell you to NEVER EVER Join a Union, never sign a Union Authorization Card. Unions ARE NOT out to help you in any way shape or form... They are in it for the Dues Money and power and nothing else. Once you are in a Union (in Texas at least) you are not getting out without a fight, you will pay those dues and the company will not help you even if the dues are paid via your check.

@Thomasjeffersoncry - Part of the challenge that we'd encounter if everyone became union is that it would stifle innovation and more importantly the highly skilled, upwardly mobile employees would go absolutely no where because union seniority rules would only benefit those who've been in the position for a number of years whether they are qualified or not. I am always reminded of Karen Silkwood when I think of Scab or Union Labor. Or the oilfield jobs I have had...no health...no retirement...just a paycheck. Thanks, "Labor Relations Expert." Your knowledge of labor's role in promoting job creation is truly astounding. You're so right! NAFTA, GATT and other trade agreements that labor said would result in massive job outsourcing haven't done that at all! Nobody who makes? washers, cars or other products has lost their jobs due to these great trade laws. Things have gotten so much better for the working class since union membership started going down! Take a trip down to a union hiring hall and you will see all of the unemployed people who've come to their union seeking a return on all of the monetary dues they have been paying out to the union for years.
