Another year of gardening in the Sleestak Forest and things are strange as ever.
In this video I show how I plant potatoes and onions as well as using lake weed for mulch and compost.

I was a fool to till the first year with snow on the ground for a new garden. So much easier with dry soil. I really like the tiller and if I only use it 10 hours a year it will last a while. So far we haven't had an actual attack from the creatures but I think it's due to the cold weather.? They are testing us.

Thanks! Yeah, I do the wet paper towel? in the baggie for germination rate tests for my saved seeds. I started to do it for germinating pepper seeds for hydroponics so I wouldn't waste so many rockwool cubes on duds. I planted the beans March 13, they have been flowering for a week. Not sure if they'll produce beans without bees. I'll just keep watering and see what happens.

Yes, I knew people were sanding pumpkin seeds but I didn't know about hot water. There's a video on youtube showing them boiling the seeds for commercial use but they didn't go into detail on? what was done. My kids have a rock tumbler...I bet I could use that if I ever needed to do lots of seeds, lol.

Interesting! I read up a bit of Magnolia tree seeds and scarification. For beans, I? read somewhere about soaking them in room temperature water overnight before planting. I used the wet paper towel in a sealed bag on a I think either 75 or 80 degree heat mat setting with good success. Very nice video. That was alot a time consuming video. I give a thumb pointing up for that, but to be honest I always give you one of those cause you make great videos! Thanks!

Thanks for doing this test but I think your correct on all counts. I did get some Giant Pumpkin seeds from a friend of ours in Canada. The seeds were placed in an envelope for sending so they arrived with? the outer shell cracked due to the rollers that process letters. None have come up after 10 days:((

I started the tomatoes and peppers for the first 4 weeks on 10-5-14. After that I nut the nitrogen and now at 5-15-14. High nitrogen will cause blossom drop on the peppers and I didn't want tomatoes growing 5 inches a day? this year. Cukes I started too weak on 7-9-5 and they suffered but they are now on 10-5-14 and the new leaves don't show any symptoms. I'd like to start over on them and do it right. What kind do you have that look so nice hanging there evenly spaced?

Last year I goofed by having indeterminate and determinate at the same time.? One shaded out the other. This year I have fewer plants and nothing as crazy so the light is making all the difference. I haven't had an employee for 10 years so I talk to myself quite a bit, lol. But yes, it's dry in here. Humidity is at 30% but I raise it to 40% by constantly bubbling water in buckets and it's steady. I get a good reaction from customers when they see it all for the first time.

Two days ago, I had a CFL burst into flame in my attic. I was not there when it happened, but did see the after effects. The light did not come on and I figured I tear it apart to see what happened. As a electronics tech, I found several burnt black resistors, a bulged capacitor, and shorted FETs. "transistors" as most would call them. Anyway, a in-line 5 amp fuse inside the lamp blew, limiting the fire. I'm not certain? all have a fuse, but if it were not there....

CFL lamps generally don't burn out because of vibrations, like the incandescent bulb... CFL lamps usually go out a lot faster when frequently switched on and off for different occasions. I'll have to think? about doing a video explaining why CFL lamps burn out faster, and also why some CFL lamps literally can cause fires during their end of life. It's much more complex than one would think. :)

I have had two cfl lamps explode (different times) in a ceiling fixture in my husband's office (right over his desk). The release of toxic gas was horrible and? then I learned very dangerous to breath. Since then i have removed all cfl lights and bought a lifetime supply of very long-life incandescents. I bought several cases of them each with a 20,000 hour life. I hate cfl.

Yikes, I won't ask about your smoke detector. I remember about 8-10 yrs ago when capacitors the HP was using on their mother boards would swell and leak (made in China). The saline they were using got mixed out with plain water. Glad we don't use CFL's but this 'could' happen with? a larger than recommended bulb enclosed. I'm thinking your bound to get a visit from the DEA if you don't stop drawing attention your way:))

Thanks for answering my questions about Kelvin. One follow up, when do you use the 2700 bulbs on fruiting plants (tomatoes, peppers, cucumber)? Do you use these bulbs exclusively on plants that will eventually flower? Or do you first use the 6500 bulbs to first grow them and switch over to using 2700 when? the flowers begin to appear. I wonder how many fires will be caused by CFLs when incandescent bulbs are totally phased out. I had a CFL in a similar enclosed fixture above my kitchen sink. I changed back to a regular bulb because they kept burning out hmmm. I will now be changing the one under my range hood because of the heat and vibration from the exhaust fan.? and i am also lucky because those darn cfl's there ballasts vibrate and in my light fixture the glass vibrates and i dealed with tht same sound for 6 years and same bulb. so i got a new fixture i put in incandescent bulb. now i am lucky and not going to die. also? the old fixture had no ground and there was a ground so they hooked it up to the metal box. i thought it was not properly grounded . but now there is a ground but we hooked it up the same way.

alot of the bulbs from china, leave that info? out. but the two new 200w.,s i just got do have a warning, and say not to be used in recessed lighting, or not to mounted anyway but in an upright position. does say also that they have covered bulbs, that are made for those applications.

I went into the attic first thing to see if there was fire up there and there wasn't. But, when the ceiling drywall was replaced I saw the wood beams with black on them as if they? were about to start on fire. I got lucky. I still use horizontal ones. I'm just careful where I use them. Look for this video "Sylvania LED Light Bulb Melt Down" = scary!

I stumbled on this idea 10 years ago when I was not really all that knowledgable, and abandoned it after one crop of tomatos. I thought I had a bad idea, but now I'll reconsider. It's certainly cheap, and I even had red and blue mylar wrapping paper for veg and fruit phases. Not to mention, you could buy a lifetime supply after christmas or at a dollar store, for about what a 10x25' roll of panda film costs.? And you can change it out anytime it gets a little crinkly.

Flat white is best because it diffuses the light. Shiny surfaces and cause the light to get concentrated at certain points. This can cause less light gettting back to the plants and/or hot spots? which will burn the plant (most common with crinkeled mylar)

I looked in a couple stores and couldn't find any Mylar wrapping paper. :( I found a couple that were shiny but were only paper on the back side. I'll keep my eyes peeled next year. I'm really surprised by your reflective results. Flat white paint more reflective that emergency blankets? Why flat white, wouldn't gloss white paint be even more reflective? I heard foil was bad as a reflector especially if it is not perfectly smooth but it works excellent for blocking light.?

Thanks for the tip! Now, reading a comment by @simplysimpleveggies and your list, you forgot one of the best features of the C3 anti-detection film, it's 90% infrared proof. I doesn't matter if we are all growing vegies, if the feds think its something else, it will be a bad night and we won't get re-imbursed? for damages. My grow room is 8' x 12' and the celling and walls are painted with eggshell white paint. There are differing tones of 'White'.

Have you ever considered "No-Till" gardening? Tilling destroys benificial microbes, especially the delicate fungal hyphae. Not tilling also prevents minerals from running off during heavy rains and snow melt. In my opinion the? practice of tilling soil and using chemical salt based fertilizer is why our food supply sucks and is causing so much sickness. It has been known for decades now that tilling is not nessasary.... Microbes do a great job of loosening the soil

That tilling had to be a LOT of work. You did good to do as much as you did. I had heard from relatives of the snow in Wisconsin, guess they had just a? dusting in the Milwaukee area. If there's snow cover at least the hunters will be happy. I always got nervous when guns were going off all around me, lol. You probably guessed I'm not a hunter. I was behind a trailer yesterday that had a large pumpkin that I thought was a display. When I passed it at a stoplight, OMG, it was an enormous Atlantic Giant. It went? all the way across the trailer (4 feet) and almost the same back to front. Couldn't get a photo by that time. I never would have expected such a large pumpkin this summer in these parts. Well, my Big Zac clones that you sent me are looking much hardier than the Cherokee Purple I have going along with them. Even though mine are less than half the vertical growth of yours, I've pollinated 3 flowers so far. What do you use for pest control on your garden? I have been trying to stick with Neem oil and I'm not doing so good. We have had a ton of rain and with that, lots of? fungus, and mold. The Neem Oil is good for that, but once you see it, the damage is done, so it's a constant battle.

Just? a quick comment on the tomato varieties ~ we've always liked the Cherokee Purples for their sweet taste but they can be a little tricky to grow well in our area. This year I put in 2 plants called 'Pineapple'. Their growth is a little bit like the Cherokee's but the coloring is yellow. They have now moved into the top spot, our newest Favorite. The sweetness is unrivaled, they melt in your mouth like ice creams. Just a thought if you try something new. Want a clone?

I think we had a combination of humid air and +90 degree temps in July that didn't cooperate with the tomatoes. I had 0 set fruit for a few? weeks in July in Illinois. My Wisconsin crop did fine but it's further North and has longer daylight. Right now both IL and WI are setting fruit and the temps and humidity are lower. This is an odd year for weather.

awesome update! that was? sooo funny! accept for the fact that I have arachnifobia, I kinda really want my tomatoes to do that good, but the only problem is that I am getting more plant than tomato! I even stopped watering 2 weeks ago and just went off rain water to try and force some flowers. they just keep growing!!!! still getting a good mess of tomatoes though :)

A squash vine borer moth layed eggs near the stem base of my Dills Atlantic Giant pumpkin. They hatched and began to eat the vine! My army of well trained ants helped me out a bit.

You'll get lots of male flowers at the start but then the female ones start popping out like crazy after about 6 feet of vine. Lots of the female ones fail but keep trying. The one I pollinated in my last Wisconsin update video I haven't seen for 2 weeks but? I get to see it this weekend. Hopefully it took. It was a female that opened that morning.

LOL...extra mint ! I try to keep the trunk of the? plant sprayed with liquid sevin or Orthomax. It really helps. Hahaha..feed the ants. It also helps know friend from foe in the garden. Moths seem harmless, but they are wolves in sheeps clothing. Much like the moth/wasp vine borer, and the moths that are responsible for cabbage worms amd corn ear worms. Needless to say, I don't like moths.

Wow... how are you? going to harvest your squash every 2-4 days? I can't keep up with mine and it's only 200 feet from my house. Sry...didn't realize the plants were ready to bloom. I'm in the South and I've already harvested my potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, beets,.... and now picking tomatoes...canned 20 quarts already and harvesting peppers, okra, kale, squash and eggplants. The corn will be ready next week. Amazing the difference in the latitude isn't it?

Yeah, I spent probably 90 minutes tying to the poles and barely got to touch the suckers. I showed my kids how to identify and tear them off so they helped a bit. I'll be away from there for 3 weeks so I'm a little nervous of what I'll see when I return. The weeds are out of control. I wish I could? work on it every day.

Get some? bone meal on those peppers. Lately i've realized that bone meal is like magic dust for peppers. If the peppers are growing slowly or getting small deformed or bumpy leaves, give them 1-2tbsp of bonemeal and in about a week, the peppers will be perfect and exploding with new growth. Give it a try.
