4 of these aircraft losses were A4C's and 1 aircraft loss was a A4E. Two A4C's were damaged by Ground Fire. We did not lose any pilots. Although we did lose 2 Avionics Marines who were captured and are still listed as MIA's. Also we lost? another ground Marine who was med evac to the Army Burn Center in Texas because of a fuel pits fire. After we left Chu Lai for CONUS , there were Pilot Losses out of Chu Lai.

There was a water bouy out about 300 ft. in the South China Sea. The Civilian Ships would anchor and pump the fuel into the land. The pilots flew 2 sorties each day. One in the morning and the second sortie after lunch. In? some cases the pilots flew a third sortie at night. The missions were general targets that were called in by spotter aircraft. We lost 5 aircraft that were damaged. Mostly accidents. The aircraft had to be shipped up to Nippi in Japan for overhaul.

The runway was supposed? to be 7,000 ft. At the beginning, the Summer of 1965, it rarely was. Mostly it was about 4,000 ft. The runway kept settling and the Seabees would tear one half of the runway up and we would fly from the other half of the runway. We rotated back to CONUS in Oct. 65 and by that time the runway was 7,000 ft. In 1966, they built a pernament Concrete Runway, which is in use today. The JP 5 came in by Civilian Ship.

How long was the runway at Chu Lai? Did your? replacement JP fuel fly in or drive in? Was the runway ever extended to make JATO unnecessary? How many sorties per pilot per week? CAS or just general targets? A/C loss rates? A4C? The '64/'65 cruise VA95 lost 3 pilots...all my roommates. After the third pilot loss no more roommates for the rest of the cruise. Wow !!! You are fast !!! I got to keep my eye on you !!! I have nothing to do with the Video. As usual, it was laying in the Closet and I? decided to let the world see Inishmurray. My wife's father was born on the Island in 1901. There is a long history that dates back to before 6 th Century AD There was never more than 100 People living on the Island. The last residents left the Island in 1948. There are 3 more parts that I am in the process of uploading.

After WW2 the Australians were in Iwakuni. Then it became Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in the early 1950's. The Navy had a P2V Neptune Patrol Squadron over in Mainside Iwakuni in the 1960's. The Japanese also had Self Defense Squadrons at Iwakuni. Today, the Marine and Japanese still have squadrons? at Iwakuni. It does not appear that the Navy Squadrons are there anymore. Wikipedia says the Navy is moving their squadrons out of Atsugi to Iwakuni in 2014.

You be the man !!! The C130 is from? VMGR 152 out of Iwakuni. Most of the film was shot at Cubi Point in Subic Bay. The Party was on Grande Island in Subic Bay on Marine Corps Birthday Nov. 10, 1964. The Barracks Scene's are on the hill in Cubi Point. Some of the film was shot on base and off base Iwakuni. There is also a pleasant sea cruise on the Washau County LST 1165 to Chu Lai May 1965. And the film ends up at Chu Lai.

Its kind of a Naval Regulations thing. No pets on Naval Ships ! The Gunny who was not even part of Ships Company decided to play it by the book. The guy who was the dogs " Master " went BERSERK !!! He told the Gunny he was going to even the score. I heard they took the guys weapon away from him. He was not in my outfit, so I don't know what happened between this? guy and the Gunny. We lost a couple of guys, but to my knowledge, nobody got FRAGGED while I was in VietNam.

That's the type of thing I heard was happening with the dogs and any other mascots! I wonder what the Gunny was thinking when he did? that. Dad and his pals were in Austria waiting to see if they were going to be sent to Japan after the Germans surrendered. They left their dogs with families in Linz, but would always miss them. Dad had enough combat time put in to be sent home instead, but still couldn't take the dogs with him : (

We had a couple of dogs up in Japan. I'm not a dog person,so I was not directly involved in their care. The dogs names were Short Time and FUBIS. We went down to VietNam either by ship or by C130 Aircraft. Our dogs went down by C130 around the end of June1965. I went down to Viet Nam by Ship in May. One of the other Squadrons hid their dogs in a Communications Trailer that? would be off loaded in VietNam. One of the Gunny's heard the dogs barking and threw the dogs overboard

Hi Marty! I know during war there are always exceptions. Pets would have made life happier for you guys, but it's something else to look out? for and protect. My dad and his pals had a couple of dogs with them toward the end of the war in Germany, but nobody could bring them home. He still gets sad when he talks about them! Have a great day : )

Lt. Chizzini is not in this Video. There is a picture of him on one of my Slide Shows. Justin was bought up in Danang by Lt. Chizzini. According to Military Regulations; NO PETS !!! Overseas in Japan and Viet Nam, the " POWERS THAT BE " looked the other way. ? Back in the States; there were NO PETS !!!

Lt. Chizzini did survive the war. He died about 3 years ago in Florida. The name " Justin Case " was used because our CO always ended a meeting with those words. In other words, he was trying to cover all contingencies so he would use the words " Just In Case " The monkey became the? mascot for a helicopter squadron up in Danang after we went home.

In 1970 My best friend got transfered from Germany to 49th Engineers at the old Sea Bees compound in Chu Lai. I was at LZ Hawk Hill, 196th LIB not far away and I got to go and stay over night with him on a couple of occasions. They grilled chicken once when I was there and the guys cooking called it? Chu Lai Buzzard. I thought that was hilarious but I definetly enjoyed it since I mainly ate C-Rats until they moved us to Camp Perdue in Danang.

? That sign is no lie. Everybody lost 40 pounds at Chu Lai. The Master Sgt. in charge of the Mess Hall fed the Troops for 62 cents per day. He also was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for setting up the Mess Hall.

I suspect that these rifles are M1 Garand. These soldiers are Thailand Army Recruits at an airbase outside? of Bangkok. The US Marines at this time used the M 14. These films were taken in March of 1965 about 2 months before we deployed to Viet Nam.

Yeah no toilets just privys with half barrels underneath to collect waste where they loaded it up toped it off with JP4 and burned it out at the trash dump at the end of the air feild.. We had? problems with civilians pillageing the dump ,even after setting the days trash on fire, you could run them off but they would return when you left , we got to where we would lay rusted M60 ammo belts at diffrent layers before burning ,that keept them out !..

rwcbanzai This Video was shot in Bangkok and Osan, Korea in Jan. and March 1965 before we deployed to Viet Nam in May of? 65. The Marine Corps never liked to spend alot of money especially? as far as accomadations were concerned. Viet Nam was the worst. c rations, No toilets, 100 degree heat, etc. Hey, we were all volunteers.

Yeah my first week in country , May the start of the dry season I thought I had died and went to hell it was so hot ! + no escape from the humidity The only guys who got a break were the avionics guys,? air conditioned trailers & vans to work out of ,they probably slept when not working.. I was stationed at Cantho airfeild not far from the Mecong river, lots of putrid smells from the vills..

Oh yeah the heat, geting around that OD canvas sends the temp up another 20 degrees nearly impossible to get any sleep? after pulling premiter guard all night.. Nice pic of the Pan Am jet we called them the freedom bird , I got to fly over to Nam on a Flying Tigers 707..When they opend the door on the runway you could feal the starch leave your kakis LOL and some guy asked whats that horabe smell at the replacement center ,the NCOIC said Vietnam get used to it soldier...........LOL

I was? on the USS Saratoga with VA-105 working on and loading bombs on A-7 1972. My last planes were A-4E Sky Hawks with VC-5 Cubi Point, Philippines!! Loved the A-4's !

Wow, what a journey documented, & camping out in the jungle in Nam! Thanks for clarifying where this was all taken. ; ( My? dad always said, war was Hell. He was a volunteer too when they were surrounded in Pusan, the stories would make one cry for paradise... Like U, they had surplus WW2 equipment & the Army was stingy then2 due to Congressional cutBacks.....Thx for sharing urExperience with all of US Marty.... ; )

This Video was shot in Bangkok and Osan, Korea in Jan. and March 1965 before we deployed to Viet Nam in May of 65. The Marine Corps never liked? to spend alot of money especially as far as accomadations were concerned. Viet Nam was the worst. c rations, No toilets, 100 degree heat, etc. Hey, we were all volunteers.
