Well youtube wont let me link pictures,but google or bing redear sunfish.Look at the jaw bone then google or bing Warmouth and look at the jaw bone.You will see that the jaw bone on your fish? looks nothing like a 8in redear,but looks very similar to a 8in warmouth. You are very good at fish I.D.,but in this case the fishes eye and mouth are to big.We are talking about the fish at 0:09 right?

I am not saying its a hybrid it was just a suggestion as to what it COULD be.You can see from the picture that if you closed the fishes mouth the jaw bone (I believe thats what its called) would extend into the edge of the eye( like how a lmb extends past the eye and how a smb extends into the middle of the eye).The? redear sunfish jaw bone does not even come close to extending into the eye.I do not have room in this comment,but in my next one I will attach pictures.

A quick GOOGLE search brings up several professional (peer-reviewed) journal articles on hybrids of the Lepomis species. Can hybrids exist? Sure enough. Is this surprising? Not according to several several full text articles (based on their success in rearing crosses in *isolated* ponds). You conjecture that the first fish? in this video is a hybrid. Can you give Uncle Steve an online URL for a panel of photos of specific F1 Lepomis hybrids with differentiating *landmarks* described?

To your specific claim: Grouping bream based on mouth (jaw opened) lateral width, I place green sunfish, warmouth, roanoke bass and rock bass together as wide-mouthed (lip-able). All other local Lepomis species are grouped as narrow-mouthed. The fish I called redear (sunfish) was narrow mouthed (not easily lip-able even for his size). GOOGLE: redear sunfish nc wildlife Compared it to the Raver sketch: excellent match? neglecting hue difference which is environmental/seasonal.

Both. :^) Fishing for these cats (not for bream), if I use the whole nightcrawler, I try to have the line running through the entire length of the worm AND adjust the worm to just cover the eye of the hook but otherwise be up on the line. On cast the worm tends to "push down"? onto the hook. If I use a half or less, it is still through the worm's length, but the worm is pushed down on the hook more to keep it in place on cast. So placement is not random: hook set rate is high by cat itself.

Those vids were very helpful. Thanks for sharing. The only question I have is relating to how you hook your worm on those rigs. In some of those videos, it looked like your worm was 3 to 4 inches up your line. Meaning, it looked like you hooked? your worm and then continued running the worm upwards onto your fishing. Were my eyes playing tricks on me? Or do you just simply run your worms to cover your entire hook? Thanks for the reply.

yeah; barbless is the way to go... better for the fish,? less traumatic removal, way better if you on occasion hook yourself or your buddies (will be thankful), and even if you hook plants (which I seem to be particularly fond of)

That would explain why, out of the several hundred fish I've caught in my? life time, I've never found a partially erroded away hook in a fish... and come to think of it, a brass hook like what I've used in crappie fishing probably wouldn't even dissolve. When I started fishing, I called everything a bass. :^) I learned to identify the sunfishes by catching lots of them and looking at "details" until I found the landmarks that let me name them reliably.? Each species has a *set* of features. In this video I say there are three hard spikes in the anal fin. That automatically eliminates rock bass (4-6 spikes) and roanoke bass (5 spikes). So then I look for stripes near the eye, the shape of the gill flap, are there splotches on the body, etc.

looking at the links your warmouth/green sunfish/rockbass look almost identical in pattern with slightly different colorings minus the stripes of the sunfish..how do you tell? them apart?? i just learned this year that the green sunfish was NOT a rockbass i thought they were all basically the same thing lol ours look very similar to eachother like yours in nc...makes me unsure of what i have caught except for the sunfish because the neon stripes...or could ours be hybrids? just curious..

The pectoral and anal fins are light colored on this fish and the sun? was shining through them. I think your reaction is reasonable, my 1st also. I have caught 100s of green sunfish. What I am finding is this: the warmouth here have a wider range of "disguises" than is typical of other sunfish. A green sunfish, even if "stripped", has fine closely spaces rows of rectangular spots of brown and green. This fish had light colored "splotches" of companion black and white spots not in rows.

I lived in west Germantown ... used to start up Lincoln Drive to get to 309 to get out to Ft. Washington .. and later to Springhouse to where I worked. But I wasn't fishing back then. Your video 'Wissahickon creek flood ' is a pleasant reminder that I would not have? had to leave my "neighborhood" to go fishing for pretty much what I catch here! :^) BTW that torrent of water in your video is just what the Eno River in this video looked like a couple of days later after a very heavy rain.

I can't tell you the name. Eric was standing down away from me catching a lot of crappies (a lot more than me). I asked him: "What are you using?" So he came over and took the tube off his jig and? handed it to me. :^) The body was lime color and the tip of it was frosty white. He said it used to have stringy tails on it when it was new. Anyway he said the crappies like it. On first threw with it, I caught that cat.

I like black body with chartreuse tails? a lot. I talked with Eric because he was catching more crappies. He was using a pre-rigged tube that was lime green with "white frosting" near the jig head. I have accumulating experiences that suggest that game fish like bream may be visually attracted, but will then get close enough to check whether the "bait" is actually food (however they do that ... "smell" it). But something like a largemouth bass just charges and swallows. ? :^)

It rained again last night ... really dumped a lot of water (which is good because we are in semi-drought) ... The Cole Mill Rd gauge on the Eno was at 2.1 feet before the rain last night ... and it peaked at 5.8 feet around 1 a.m. and? is currently at 4.0 ft at Noon. :^) No fishing the Eno today!

I wish? there were more, but I live in an urban area. To reach this point (which is a starting point for a stretch I fish) is a 3/4 mile walk from where I park at the entrance of that section of Duke Forest. For fun I looked at NE OK switching between Satellite view and map view. I see what you mean. All I can say is: fish what is there and appreciate it. :^)

Great video once again! I wanted to ask - have you ever tried a fishing a nitecrawler under slip float? Don't use any weight, just let the weight of the crawler slowly fall to the bottom. I started using this tactic? and the crappie, bluegills, and perch went nuts for it.

I knew you'd have luck with micro crankbaits. Have you ever used a "Hobo" hand fishing rig? It's shaped like? a ball in a cup, but you hand spool line and basicly thumb release the line with a toss of a baited hook and bobber. Can't get more minimalist than that. hand lining is about the only way in some dense tree lined fishing holes.

I've been finding this year that these shallow, water-rushing pools are the lurking places for nice bream. For some reason the wider, slower, deeper? areas don't seem to have many bream at all. That may change as we get to summer.
