I personally find Bernadette more enjoyable,? however, Donna is incredible (and is, in my opinion, the second best Sondheim interpreter there is--beaten only by Peters), and Donna's also, to me, the ultimate Phyllis.

I honestly have no problem with Bernadette I just happen to find Donna more enjoyable and I don't know, I get a little defensive when my favorite people of all time are compared and aren't better than the other person. I would go on to one of her videos and then I would see notes for? Bernadette Peters being better. That's all fine and good but it's Donna's video not Bernadette's and I just feel like people can compliment Bernadette on her own video.

Not to sound rude...but why would you propose the all-too valid question of comparing Bernadette and Donna and its uselessness, then claim Donna's "better"? It voids your statement and comes off as more biased. I don't think either of the two are "better", however, I do gravitate towards anything/everything Bernadette does, but I absolute LOVE Donna. She's flawless; she's actually my? favorite Sondheim interpreter after Bernadette.

Donna Murphy is amazing as always! Just loved? the way she sang this... I heard many others and they didn't come close to this! But I get really really REALLY annoyed when people always compare her to Bernadette Peters and say that Bernadette is better. I think Donna Murphy is way better and I feel like Donna Murphy is in a league of her own and doesn't need to be compared to anyone else.

I saw both them, and Jan live on Broadway. She's wonderful (though she doesn't quite succeed in stealing the show away from Bernadette, whose intensely emotional, powerhouse performance left me floored), and definitely a wonderful Phyllis. I hesitate to compare her to Donna since I adore Donna so much, that it leaves me? biased and unwilling to consider anyone else, haha.

Donna Murphy (absolutely one of the best Sondheim interpreters) is probably the only actress that could make me more interested or invested in Phyllis over Sally (as the latter is a less showy, but ultimately richer role), but with? Murphy, this is really Phyllis' show; even with the lyric flub, she's incredible. She's got the character down to a T. Her "Could I Leave You?" is the best I've ever seen. Let's see if Jan Maxwell can thrill me just as much (reviews all point to yes!)

1:40 Jesse's a...Lucy's a lassie ? lol She's? not the first, and certainly not the last to confuse names in this tricky number. From this clip, I could see that she would be great in this part. The legs alone guarantee it!

Although at the same time, that might have been the director's intention. We see the "younger" version of Sally and think, "Oh girl... you have no idea what's coming, do you?" I think it was the director's choice (or possibly Clark's own choice) to? play this song as if we're seeing a full-on flashback, as if we've traveled back in time -- this is how a sexy 20 year-old showgirl might have sung this number in a 1941 Ziegfeld-style revue (before she lost her dream guy, married the next-best thing, and sank into a life of disappointment and bitterness). We don't see the pathos that we might be used to, which (to some) could make this approach less satisfying.

I can't imagine how she'll fit into the production in LA, but am a bit intrigued. I'll be glad to see her perform this as something other than a cabaret/"follies" number (which? she does here, but ultimately doesn't work), and for her to, at least try to, sink into Sally's skin.

See, I do like Vicki Clark, especially in Light in the Piazza, but I think you're right here. This is not one of her best performances. The first half of the song is beautiful, elegant ... but not tragic at all. And then she goes for a beltfest at the end. ? Meh. I agree also that Donna Murphy is the perfect Phyllis.

I guess I'm biased-- I really don't care for Victoria Clark at all--but I really don't like this performance...& this is one of my top favorite Sondheim numbers. I'm all for different interpretations but I didn't see any pain, hurt, obsessiveness or anger here. I just didn't feel anything. I almost always prefer Sally to Phyllis (she's so much more complex and fascinating), but I definitely would've been a Phyllis fan for this? production (especially since the flawless Donna Murphy played her).

Joining with everyone in thanking you for posting (this filled a rainy Monday night nicely). I grew up in Australia listening to the cassette tape of the Original Broadway Cast, and then got to see the show on Broadway in 1985 when I was 14. (and was always a little disappointed when the voices were different!).? So it's been lovely to see the original cast performing - even if it was a little tricky to see. But who cares, when the quality of performance is so amazing. Thank you.

Thank you! I 'grew up with this show,' and I was lucky to perform in it as Paul(OOOOOOFF-Bdway....) while I was a Drama student. I've? waited 33 years to see these glorious ghosts from the OCA get in formation for that triumphant transformation of the stage from mirrors to Finale! Very touching to see the original cast....thank you for posting.
