One thing I did learn when I started using DSLR is the use of ISO. On a bright sunny day, you never go over 100 ISO. In low light, never ever go over 1600 ISO. And always try to get the correct white balance. In this video, lighting wasn't good especially where the pastor was sitting. So I had to iso at 1600. Next time I'll use my 50mm 1.8f to bring down the iso to 800 and this footage will? be 2x better. You know, maybe one day I'll have a short video showing 'my way of using dslr'

Thanks dude! Well, let's see... I used my Tamron 17-50mm zoomed all the way in. Aperture at 2.8f, 50 shutter, 24fps, 1080p. 'Standard' picture style, I believe I used 'fluorescent' white balance but made a minor change to it in Vegas. No saturation or other color correction. And a tiny bit of sharpness. I always use the 'standard'? picture style...just make sure you get the right white balance. Oh, and having a good lens does help. Thanks brother!

I think it's a great idea. The only problem I can see is that the screws securing the plate to the stabilizer stick up and might interfere with the body of the camera if you're trying to? mount in in an adjacent hole

I meant to tell ya buddy, I made a version of the first silver flyer and it get's great shots and eve better reactions! Brilliant design dude! I used the ball? head of a tripod and otherwise used your exact design. Your new addition seems nice and diverse though Cheers dude!

Thanks! Just trying to figure this out so those who want to build it and keep it under $20 can do so. Having the quick release plate helps but again,? not everyone wants to buy one because of the cost. Anyway, I'm proud to say that I'm closer to making a true $20 steadicam without stupid pvc parts or some other complicated design.

Canon SX40 and Steady Dragon short test

Canon SX40, Steady Dragon 2.5, Total of 5 washers. Sony Vegas 10 to render video. No color correction and only a tiny bit of sharpness added to the video.
Very light setup so I will have to add more weight to avoid the 'vibration' that was caused in some clips.

that's funny because I edit in Vegas 10, using DSLR footage and never had? any problems. or build a hackintosh and you could use final cut. but through experience, pc can do everything a overpriced mac can do at a fraction of the cost...just my opinion. I build my own pc's so I know what I'm doing with my files.

what's your budget? For around $400 you can get a Bower wide 2.8f which is what I use to shoot with my diy steadicam. For? $650 you can get the Tokina 11-16mm which is very popular. I always try to get best bang for buck and that is why I chose the Bower.

All of it is in auto focus.? I really like this camera because of it's DSLR features. No longer do I have to worry about carrying my T2i and lenses during family outings. Awesome zoom, great high def quality, and compact. Make sure you learn to use manual exposure because auto will blow out your highlights very often. Good luck!

I'm really not into photography but this camera does take some good pics. I bought it to use as b-roll footage when I shoot weddings. So I recommend for video! Keep in mind, it only shoots at 24fps 1080p and 30fps at 720p. ? Some folks like 60fps. I wanted something that would shoot at 24fps to match my Canon T2i. Thanks!

Try using the 3rd 1/4" hole on the balance correction plate (3rd from the back). Also, the center bolt will have less washers then the two end bolts so don't? have that one even with the others. If you have 9 washers on each end, my guess is the center should be about half the washers.

It's a Canon T2i w/ a Zoom H1 Mic on the hot-shoe. The entire setup is 1010 grams, and doing the math (1/3 the weight) I've? tried putting 9 washers on each bolt. Every adjustment makes a new imbalance it seems, and no matter how small a change I make I can't get it straight. And if I try to put the plate further up, the back screw gets in the way, and I think that's wrong. Is it because I don't have a quick-release such as your Manfrotto? I'm honestly running out of ideas and may return it :\

what kind of camera do you have? Did you try using the 3th or 4th 1/4" hole on the balance correction plate? When you make adjustments? to the balance correction plate, they have to be tiny adjustments. Also, once you have the correct balance and no wobble, you MUST MAKE MARKS ON THE DRAGON with a marker or whatever so next time you mount it, you know exactly where to put the bal.correction plate. The maker needs some sort of plate that is easier and faster to remove. Like my manfrotto 577

Hey man, I just picked up one of these Dragon stabilizers after seeing a lot of awesome footage you've been able to get with it. I just opened it up today and I'm having the most frustrating time of my life with it. It? wobbles, and spins, and I just can't get it to stay straight. When you do quick side to side moves, the camera stays still and straight. When I try it the stabilizer leans the camera to the side, about 45 degrees, then wobbles until it's centered again. Any help would be great

Right. Is that what the maker told you or what the specs show on his ebay store? I think it can work with your camera, however, because of the overall size of? the dragon, the higher the weigth load, the harder it will be to balance. You should see the original steady dragon, tiny as f..k (smaller than version 2) but I still was able to balance it and get decent test footage. anyway, good luck!

If I could get the emt's dirt cheap along with the traxxas and release plate, I would consider selling them. But it takes lots of time and commitment in making these plus there is tons of competition so it would be hard? to make a profit. Good luck with your build!

Thanks man! I started with doing free gigs...then a few? that were paid but I did not charge much. But now, with my experience and a few highlights on my resume, I can charge a higher fee. So maybe you can do 1 or two free gigs or low cost gigs then move up. Give it 100% with every gig and add to your portfolio or resume. Good luck!

It does balance better than what you'd think. I was skeptical too. I have T3i with a 50mm 1.8 lens (pretty compact rig). I tried the metal plate but was? having trouble (though I think that is the better option if you are not going to use the quick release plate). Not ideal but it's what I got right now. The weights on the bottom can be repositioned, and that is where I made most of the adjustments.

Well, in my experience I only use one hand..my right hand. The only time I touch the steadicam with my left hand is when I'm going to rotate or make a quick stop. Most guys seem to use both hands, especially with a glidecam type stabilizer. Even with a glidecam that I used a couple of times, I only used my right hand and got very nice smooth motion. But you're correct. I too believe using your other hand will? cause less fluid motion. Practice makes perfect though.

the main parts can cost between $15-$25. The release plate is optional which will drive the cost up but it? is an important piece that can make it very easy to balance. I had a guy from Russia build one a couple of months ago so I'm sure you can find the parts in the UK. Keep searching. These are parts found in your hardware electrical department.

It's going to be trial and error so you will have to try different configurations. If you get drift, which is normal in some cases, you need to learn to control it. you can try to use your other hand to control it. ? It's really hard to give you tips on how to balance it unless I can see a video of your setup. Each camera is different. Thanks for checking it out.

@defnyung thanks for the idea. I finally got mine built, and now mostly balanced (camera facing mostly straight and side to side is pretty square), which has taken most of the time. I mounted the camera straight to the bar, and it is pretty sturdy.? I didn't have a quick release plate and I tried one of those metal plates from your other video but wasn't able to get it right (I may still work with that).

How to Balance Steady Dragon Stabilizer in 2 minutes

Because of the weight of my camera and lens, I had to add additional weight. I added a dumbell collar. If you are using a light lens such as the kit lens then you may not have to add more weight.

Thanks again. Sadly, that guys t3i is a completely different shape and 250 grms heavier than my camera. I also noticed his correction plate is built more intelligently, having 2 sections with one raised quite a bit. Mine is flat, with only a small groove to recess the screw to the camera. When I try? to balance on tripod, my adjustments defeat themselves cuz I have to unscrew the handle to adjust my left/right balance on plate. I have no access to turn the plate screw once handle is screwed in.

My friend, don't bang your head worrying about the 'science' of these things. It's really not that hard. Take a look on youtube and there one guy who shows how to setup the Dragon and he's using a T3i. This Steady Dragon works great with smaller lighter cameras and the heavier load? on the Dragon the harder it is to balance. Good luck.

Yeah, I think the problem with me is that I don't quite understand the concept of the stabilizer. I know? it has to be balanced so it becomes a 'magical' apparatus (perfectly weighted in every direction so it acts as a complete unit and not as a couple of contradictory parts as defined by the handle and ball joint). Once my head comprehends what I'm supposed to be weighing and measuring against, I'll probably have a better shot. But I've exhausted all my variables yet again today lol.

Hi, thanks for the response. Funnily enough, I don't have anything expensive for gear. I have a sony dvd-dcr610, which weighs about 391.2 grams and 3 small warming, polarising and uv filters attached..and a 2 hr battery attached on back.? When all is said and done, not too much more weight than the 391 grams, initially. I've stopped trying to figure this thing out. Maybe someday I'll have the capacity to get my money's worth with some dumb luck.

WARNING: All camera stabilizers are very difficult to balance including Merlin's and inexpensive Steady Dragon's. My advice to all that are having balancing issues with the Dragon: Try to remove battery grips, microphones, or ther accessories because the heavier the camera, the harder? it will be to balance. And the reason is because this Dragon is too small for most DSLR especially 5d or 7d. Believe me, it took me at least 1hr to learn to balance with all the DRagons I've tested.

I have to say, I've spent 7 hours on it and as far as I've got is that I dislike my level of intelligence because I cannot figure out the physics of getting this thing balanced so it moves as it should (firm as if it's one piece instead of a floppy piece of shit). I think you don't have enough weight on top. Try adding weight like I did behind the camera. You can't see it in this video but go to the ebay sellers site and take a look at the two pictures that he has? of the T2i with a Bower 14mm wide and the Tamron 17-50mm and notice how I had to add weight on top. My steps with camera would be: put camera on correction plate then mount on top of the stabilizer, add a little weight to top, then start adding washers at bottom two spots.

This is the first version. They now have version 2.5 and I just made a quick review of the 2.5 Dragon. If you want to get one, I highly recommend them. If you want to save money you can build my silver flyer, however, it can be trial and error with mine and frustrating too if you make a mistake? building it. Both work though. Good luck!

I wish the ball joint or 'gimbal' was better. Not as smooth as my diy gimbal but I love the size and weight of this Steady Dragon. The weight of the camera and Bower 14mm wide is actually heavy and I wasn't sure if the size of the Steady Dragon would? be able to hold it properly. But it worked! I recommend it for anyone looking for a inexpensive stabilizer.

All my shots with diy steadicam during the shots of the couples dancing were shot at 2.8f with Bower 14mm wide. A lens that does 1.8f will be nice too and more? shallow dof. I have the 50mm 1.8f but don't use it much since the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8f gives me similar results.

How does a 2.8 do ...

Thanks man! I appreciate it! I initially made this video to show off my DIY? steadicam work but then made it my official 2011 Wedding Reel for future clients to watch and hopefully hire me. All the slider shots, steadicam work, detail shots are always taken by me (Canon t2i) and the easy stuff (tripod work, 7d) my buddy Eric helps me with that. Basically I'm the one who is running around like crazy stressing to get the beautiful shots for a good highlight video. Thanks again!

Thanks brutha! I love showing off this reel simply because of my? $15 steadicam. You should have seen the look in some of the photographers when they see my DIY. They think it's a joke and don't believe I get good footage. In the end, I always have the last laugh. Thanks again!

start by getting a good camera. You can get a t2i with kit lens for under $500. Practice using the camera then practice your editing. once you feel you're ready to do a wedding, go get one by charging? a minimal fee or if it gets hard to maybe a free wedding. If you have the money, try to get a slider, steadicam, good tripod and maybe a 50mm 1.8f lens. Good luck!

Sami, thanks man! Most of the shots of the bride getting ready are hand held (90%). Ceremony...tripod and of course, my diy steadicam for many 'flying' shots and during their first dance.? Having IS in the Tamron lens definitely helps. BTW, I use two lenses during my wedding shoots, the TAmron 17-50mm and Bower 14mm wide angle. Steadicam shots always with the wide angle

ID remember. I think it was zoomed? half way, pretty sure aperture at 4. But at 50mm no way and definitely not 2.8f otherwise would have been to exposed. Thanks!

Ali, fue mi intencion rendirlo a 720p para no subir un archivo tan pesado. La plantilla es de 1920x1080 no 1440. Si hubiera sido? un video de una boda, entonces lo hubiera subido a 1080p y no 720p. Apesar de haber hecho este video a 720p, la calidad parece de 1080p. Gracias y saludos amigo!

Sami, the filter may be old school because I cannot find any Canon ND8 filters anywhere. I got lucky and found it on ebay and took a chance. The box that it came in looked old school so this just may be a vintage filter. Works better than the Tiffen and definitely better than the chinese filter. It is a silver filter and it actually has some weight to it. Much heavier than the chinese and? Tiffen

Big reason I got such a nice clear and colorful image is because of the perfect lighting.? Yes, the nd filter helped but keep in mind, my ISO was perfect, the white balance was also perfect. The thing about an ND filter is it makes it easier to keep my shutter speed low and my aperture below 5. Without the filter, I would have had to increase the shutter speed to a stupid # or increase the aperture well above 10...both big no no in the world of DSLR. Thanks for watching.

Gracias Sergio! Use el filtro 'Canon' que para mi, tambien es chafa y hecho en China. La T2i tiene 'picture style' y para este video use el estilo 'Landscape'. Nombre, con el filtro y este estilo 'Landscape' los colores y claridad me sorprendieron! Thanks? my friend!
