Well, light from the sun is white light(Light composed of multiple colors). When the light rays hit the water droplets,? the different colors refract at different angles and become whatever color they are. In effect, the water droplet acts to separate the different rays of light and projects all those colors back to your eye. Go to the local community college and take a quick physics lesson.

This might start a completely different discussion but I recall a childhood story my father told me. My father grew up in a christian family and was told that god put the rainbow in the sky. Then one day he was playing with the garden hose? and by coincidence he made his own rainbow. This made my father move from being a christian to being a scientist. I was around 6-8 years old ('85-'87) when I heard this story, which shows that this phenomenon of course did also occur 20 or more years ago ;o)

Seriously? The water acts as a prism and refracts light just as rainwater does when you see a rainbow in the sky. If you took purified water in a spray bottle when the sun was out, you'd see the same thing! You just never noticed it before. Oddly enough, if there were contaminates in the? water, you might not see a rainbow because it could prevent the light from refracting in the water. We've known about this stuff for a thousand years... get with it! Stay in school kids!
