Also, steel had been in use for centuries, even during Roman times. Purpose-made as an alloy of carbon and iron, its quality tended to increase as the centuries passed and new metallurgy techniques were used. Anything close to pure iron would've been a horrendous material to make any armor? or weapons out of. It is far too soft. Artwork of the period from 1400 onward frequently shows knights in battle protected by full plate, including manuals on armored combat.

full plate for the battlefield would be different than full plate for the tourney field. Tourney? armor had specialized use in the joust, and so were relatively thick with extra plates often added to areas such as the left shoulder/neck. Most knights from 1400 onwards would likely have worn significant amounts of plate, mounted or not. The weight of a mounted knight's armor wouldn't be "insane" or else they really wouldn't be able to get up after being unhorsed.

I am talking full plate armour however most knights on the battle field did not wear full plate? armour unless they where mounted troops only. For mounted troops the weight of full plate was insane however for foot knights the armour was a lot lighter due to legs and arms being often just protected by leather and strategic plates. Regarding the most advanced full plate of the time, the winner would have to go to Gothic harness, which weighed around 45 lb. This was very light when distributed over the whole body, and was very maneuverable because of this low weight. Breathability in armor like that would be stifling, but it would far worse to fight in the kinds of immensely heavy armors you suggest. This simply isn't feasible. I believe the? Master Armourer you speak of was referring to advanced tourney armor.

Are we talking about combat-usable armor here? If so, an 80 lb. suit would be pretty stifling, but if other suits were to weigh twice? that or more, they would be absolutely cripplingly heavy and worthless in battle. If you're referring to tournament armor, however, this makes much more sense. Tournament armor didn't require all that much maneuverability for the joust, since horses moved in relatively straight lines. The suits did weigh as much as 100 lb., and were thicker.

Also, maille would likely be worn only under joints and other exposed areas, to limit the weight of the armor. Seeing as leather would do little or nothing? that the metallic layers aren't already doing, and that the leather? would be extremely hot and tiring, it's more likely that cloth was worn as a basic buffer layer between skin and the metallic armors.

where are you getting 200 lb. from? Are you saying they wore 200 lb. worth of armor on themselves? If so, this is ludicrous. If you mean 200 lb. for the total weight of the man, though, then that makes much more sense. Regarding 30 minute combat times, there is really no way to know how long a knight would have continuously fought, even in a pitched? battle. It seems likely that they would have retreated behind any friendly lines to rest and resupply and reform if possible.

against the irons and steels used? in full plate armour as a flat plate the longbow with bodkin arrow could indeed penetreate the plate however the armours plates are contoured to give the arrow no flatness to penetrate the velocity of the arrow was not sufficient to get a solid bite on the contours so they ricocheted away this is why the longbodkins can penetrate thicker metal shields but not the plate armour itself

European armor was refined in bloom forges, Asian as well to be exact. Coal and coke fired blast furnaces produced brittle pig iron that had to be further refined, making wrought iron. Plate armour, even munitions plate, was virtually impervious to arrows munitions plate could only be guaranteed to be penetrated and cause an injury at a very close distance. I? would for once like to see these test done on iron that has never gone through modern process. The metal for their tests is way too pure, try it with bog iron that has been pounded to get impurities out. We know the longbow was effective,at least against certain areas because it was used long after every other nation went firearm. A lance would have a good chance to pierce an authentic coat of plates, chain wasn't worn underneath either.

Not true at all. Mail was largely out of use except around the joints of plate. They were not used together like in fantasy. Mail was the same weight and less protection for much more labor. It was slightly more flexible, but considering you can? run in plate it isn't an issue. These tests are flawed because their sheet metal is treated in a blast furnace, no iron before 1828 could withstand a steam engine, so we know armor was not that strong. Earlier furnaces made iron too brittle.

Take this into account: Arrows must be custom made for the intended bow.? Arrows in medieval times were like bullets today, they must be made to the specifications of the intended weapon. One can't simply pick up arrows made for a 90lbs bow and loose it from a 150lbs bow, the result will be that your arrows will miss the target. As a result well made Armour piercing arrows were very hard to come by because they were very expensive. Good armour was more common on the battle field for a knight.

We were talking about a very specific weapon and it's affect? on plate armor. You are going on to different armors and weapons. Ren. Maices were about 3 pound one handed weapons, they were affective. BUT They didn't destroy armor like in the vid. Wikepedia talks that the hammer could give a "concussion" on propper impact to a head with a steel helm. Find me one place where they say "break bone under steel". They are affective because they hurt, stun, and allow for follow up kills to joints.

Steel made plate armor wasn't that common, and even then, the damage maces cause? isn't as aesthetically noticeable as a sword/arrow/penetrating weapon, that's where blunt weapons shine. You can stand by it all you want, but the fact of the matter is that skulls were crushed with plate helmets found caved in. Read about blunt trauma weapons in any book you want, they will all always say they were effective against armored and unarmored opponents.

I stand by what I said without citing evidence. You might dent the chest plate, but you are not going to do severe, bonebreaking damage if a mace landed on propperly? made steel plat of armor. No, it wouldn't be the same effect as an arrow as the arrow is a penetrative weapon, all that force is focused on a very small central point, where as warhammers and maces had huge hit spots. To my knowlege, maces were used to get around armor but not plate armor. You might be able to do a number on a guy with chainmail. If you wacked the plate with a propper mace, you would have a similar action of the arrow in the vid, same or less even depending on mace and strength of the user. You might be able to ring? a guys bell with a headblow, and try to get to less armored jointed bits.

Arrow is going to have decelerated a great deal in addition to have spread it's energy across the entire plate which is why plate was such a good defense. This? doesn't even address any padded gambeson normally worn underneath the plate and the case where it's sometimes not even touching the body. The actual energy is still less than a bullet impacting soft body armor. We have plenty of example of people being hit and not reducing their combat abilities.

You needed a solid hit for the flanges to crack through the armor.? Yet that was still better than a 1h sword at the time which was pretty useless against most armor. Lol just an good example of how mobile armour is. But does he wear every thing or is for example the gambeson? or chainmail missing? (Gambeson and chainmail are worn under the plate. Gambeson to prevent mail from ripping the skin open and mail for the unplated parts.)

Im not saying armour was unweildy, just that it must have been thicker than stuff worn during recreations now, look at the jousting? bit in your vid for instance, they barely touch eachother, and that is the kind of forces reproductions are made for. And all the reproductions I have seen are about as thick as supposed combat armour I have seen in museums. This is baseless presumption however. Still I would prefer a suit of Vasci Caenlann/Fenlan. Also to me, the breast plate in that film looks? much the same as the the one worn by the man giving demonstrations of getting on a horse and getting up in plate in your movie. Though without knowing absolute specifics of each peice this is nearly meaningless. Stabbing for weakpoints is pretty much logical, even if the armour was easy to peirce, going for the weaker bits is what you want to do.

This is a great video, Phalera, but I think they left something out. Roman soldiers would typically have worn a padded garment known as a subarmalis underneath their armor, whether mail or plate, to help bear the weight. It helped the shoulder plates of the segmentata line up correctly, and would prevent the rings? of the mail being driven into the body by a weapon's impact. That is somewhat true i suppose, but i have to disagree with you about the firearms, yes in the early stages (muskets,canon,etc..) militaries were VERY strict but as time wore on and weapons became more advanced, that was not as much of an issue, i mean look at today's modern battlefield, very rarely will you see a engagement with over 200 troops within a square mile, so it seems like fighting has become "less" strict, (except of course the? rules of engagement)

True but that was a different time period with different styles of fighting. Once guns came around you had much more casualties per engagement compared to melle based weaponry. I think this increase in casualties was as a result of the fact that by time armies got guns as a primary weapon,? military structures started to become far more disciplined, like the Roman legions and thus were more committed to the fight, also the weaponry themselves was far more devastating.

You are right though, people think of battles in holly wood as being the way it was in real life. Most battles in real life were nothing more than large organized skirmishes. Most battle were over in a matter of minuets and casualties were? few because soldiers don't want to die and thus are not as committed to the cause as we are lead to believe. However when two truly committed armies do battle, it is then that we see true casualties such as during the roman civil wars.

No, the average Roman Legionary did not where any leg armour what so ever. It was possible for a Centurion or an Optio (Centurion's second in command) to use leg armour but they usually had to buy the greaves with their own money. The reason for this was because Roman legions were very mobile armies that were redeployed often where they were needed.? As such they only need what is essential and leg armour will only weigh them down in these long rapid marches.

Think about it. The only way to defeat a Post-Marian Roman Legion is to use superior weaponry. Those shields alone with? their pilum and gladius make for a killer combination of equipment, not to mention their armour, command structure, supporting troops and brutal discipline. Their is no way you could fight a Roman legion with equal technology as them. I would not go as far as to say guns but superior tech is the only easy way to beat them. Perhaps an army of mounted Knights.

Really hit them in the neck? You look at his Armour and think that because his helmet exposes his neck that it will be an easy target. Even if you were Robin hood, you cant his is neck if he has a shield protecting it, and it there is one thing a Roman knew how to do it was use his shield. A post Marian? Scutum is by far the largest non-passive shield ever used by an army in the history of man kind and every Legionary trained with one and used one for 25 years and you are going to use arrows...
