I don't think there is much reference to human kindness in Atlas Shrugged, but there are kids there. First, Dangy is shown when she was a kid, along with others. In Galt's Gulch, there is a scene with children playing? around. Also, there is no cruelty to others in the books that I can remember, except from the villains of course. It made more sense when Rand was writing the book. That was before satellite technology. Still by the late 40's (when began writing the book) I seriously doubt there was anywhere in the United States that had not been discovered. I'm probably more of a "Conservatarian" but I think the question is interesting. Dueling used to be acceptable in this country. The conservative side (and especially the Christian side) of me opposes it on the grounds that no? one has the right to take another's life regardless of consent. But even the libertarian side of me says that the powers granted to the state by the people, life, liberty and property, the taking of a life, even consentually, violates those basic protections.

While? watching the movie I felt as if I had seen the whole thing before all my life. I think what losses liberals to not stick around long enough to hear the message and allow them to fully develop their name calling is how simply the story is written not unlike the Constitution that seems to lose them due to the lack of big confusing words and twits and turns. It's fine novel with a great story. All the scenes with dialogue move well. The scene about the 20th Century Motor Company is amazing. But ... to be? objective, much of the narrative writing is turgid. There are chunks of paragraphs that are ponderous and slow, especially when Rand focuses on? characters just standing around doing nothing, or just looking of into space. But that's my only criticism. The characters are well developed, and the plot makes you want to read more.

I agree *and* disagree with you. I really like Christopher Hurt's voice, but the editing/technical is very poor. You can hear where he stops for the day, and where he picks up. Scott Brick's version is much better in that regard and nearly? seamless. I think both do an extraordinary job with this speech. This movie is great, the story is great, problem is, it's anachronistic. The train overall is an obsolete, unless your talking about freight rail. Yet we see Acela like trains, there's only only one Acela train in the North East United States. Fares on Amtrak's Acela average 75 cents a passenger mile of which much is subsidized, compared with average airfares of 13 cents per mile and bus fares even lower. Rearden Metal would be useful probably? making cars or construction beams.

Yes. I'd never heard of Rand, either. But I got the novel and read it. After four college degrees and a lot more general interest courses, I'm very burned out with reading. It takes a lot for me to read something especially as long as this was. But I finished it in a very short time. I now know who John Galt is and where Atlantis is. When do you think Capitalism should be regulated? What are the complexities of the human factors involved in the system? I think it should only be regulated in regards to? property rights (which is inherent in a capitalist system) and the protection of essential environmental resources, particularly water and air. Other than that, I don't see the need for any other intervention. When intervention are "required", the officials always provide a reason for it, but they never admit their role in it.
