I don't think it has a great deal of bearing on Rand as I'm not saying she's wrong because she has conviction (though I do have my worries about those who are oversure) and JFK's presence was far more relaxed. What she was concerned with was being FORCED to give up things for others and not having a choice (welfare state). Other interviews (Donahue) she made clear that doing things like you did is fine if makes you happy and is your value, then it is not a sacrifice? of you to others. You did that because you CHOSE to. People are different but most of us have very similar basic needs and standards of well-being, so morality can and should be based on science and reason. Ayn Rand was against self-sacrifice, particularly legalised state-enforced self-sacrifice. Societal altruism was embodied in many socio-economic methodologies: socialism, communism, fascism, nazism. Reality as we perceive it has patterns and laws that are not susceptible to our? imagination and desires, so in a sense it is objective. It must be said, however, that our reason is not all-powerful. Meh! Existentialism is about the individuality but it doesn't? relate to me, the idealist who doesn't want to think uncomfortable about myself, which is altruistic if it's uncomfortable, since I'm anti-methodical, I don't do even Ayn Rand because it's a method used for happiness and a method of being good. You must have never read Atlas Shrugged or pretty much anything Rand wrote. If you think what we have now or had (blaming the housing bubble on capitalism, etc)? you are sadly mistaking. I think she is often misinterpreted, mainly because she uses different definitions than what people usually consider altruism. She would argue helping people is perfectly fine as long as that desire to help comes from within? you, i.e. you value helping people, and I do, she merely argues that you shouldn't feel obliged or enslaved to others. There is room for charity even in objectivism, although I myself don't agree with some of the conclusions of that philosophy, but that's another topic.

I really appreciate her writing style. Try "Atlas Shrugged" for it's a really good book. She lays out her views on spirit of capitalism and human inter-relations in general. I disagree with the main core of her argument, although? a lot of her visions were based on the situation in Russia during Bolshevik revolution. I find that most who dismiss Ayn Rand's morality don't really understand it. Her "selfishness" is long-term, principled self-interest. People are a combination of the physical and mental, and your self-interest includes psychological values. Self-interest is not to be reduced to only the physical, such as money.? First off, your hypothetical scenario here fails. If an animal knows something is threatening, including a gun, they will fear it. Other animals, and humans, react out of survival instinct.? Second, humans aren't "special." Odds are, in a huge way, there are far more advanced life forms in the universe.
