Buddy's an amazing guitarist but a so-so singer and his guitar work at its best is very delicate.- not the sort of thing that has mass market appeal. Great violinists and jazz guitarists don't expect to get rich and famous and neither should Buddy. Cream never would have made it big as a pure blues band? and neither would the Stones.Actually sometimes I think these speeches are made just to establish 'street cred'. Junior Wells was really amusing when he tried to get political.

Buddy wrote a few good songs, but not enough. Neither Cream nor anyone else could make it on pure blues. Their biggest hits were White Room and Sunshine. Jazzmen like Miles and Coltrane took Tin Pan Alley? songs and hot-rodded them. The Brits did the same thing to Crossroads and Spoonful. Coltrane's show-stopping number was an extended version of Rogers and Hammerstein's My Favorite Things. Clapton took Robert Johnson's acoustic Crossroads and turned it into a guitar showpiece. That;s showbiz.

I've followed Buddy, and in several books/comments it seems like he's angry that Blues didn't reach a nationwide audience/world wide audience until the white brits did it. I can understand that though, with the racism in the USA at the time. Case? in point, Louis Armstrong was known worldwide(England, Italy,France) in the 1920's-50's, while in the US he was only known and respected in more "worldwide" and liberal places like Chicago and New York early on.

Whoever the hell thinks Buddy didn't write his own stuff is a damn ignorant fool. I've got a whole catalog of original works, and that Marc Brown knows about Buddy and the history of the blues like I know about performing open-heart surgery... I saw him playing at the B.B. King music Fest in Asheville, NC back in late 2000, and Buddy held a note long enough to move? to stage left, introduce himself, speak with and shake hands with an old white lady on oxygen, and commence playing... 3 minutes.

I agree with you. Buddy still does seem to have some anger, I think he thinks white British players 'stole his music". But what did they do with it? Now the entire world knows the difference between? Delta and Chicago Blues. Besides, from what I've heard of Buddy, he's been high and drunk since the 60's....so what kind of influence is that? He could have walked into a studio in the 70's and 80's and put out a traditional Blues album like Eric did, but he didn't. Wonder why..?

He's talking about how the old Black blues musicians had to struggle with racism and hardship in America 50-100+ years? ago and didn't make any money or get noticed. And how it took British blues players like Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc for Blues to get noticed mainstream. An I don't blame him for any anger. But, what's important is guys like Clapton, etc ALWAYS credited the Black Blues players, even when society didn't. Did I make a good point??

The John Mayer model is identical to the SRV model? except that it doesn't say SRV on the pickguard. Having a hero to admire and emulate is one thing. Trying to sound, look, act, and copy someone's style instead of coming up with your own is insulting. I'm a well known industry professional so I think my opinion is a solid one.

I put out three that were on a major record label. One went to #17! Have played too many 10,000 seat arenas to count. Played the Crossroads fest about 5 years ago or so. After our show I recall getting plastered and starting a fist fight w Vince Gill in the Fender tent. The hick just pissed me off! Just did a show w? Trucks old drummer, Dev Allmon, and Mike Zito. Good little band! I behaved myself and no bullshit since they were soft ego'd nice guys. "The Bluesman from Atlanta", in da house!

Jonny Lang must be one of the most underrated musicians in the world. So much soul. His "Darker Side" is one? of the best performed blues songs ever and it actually made my kids appreciate the blues genre. Thank you Jonny for that. And Buddy Guy is almost as funny as Jonny is good.

McLarenF1God, Is absolutely right. I went? into a Jonny Lang concert cold with my wife, and became a fan of the blues that night. Up there with the best live guitarists I've seen. The man has soul. I've since seen BB King and Taj Mahal, both great, I'll take Jonny anyday :)

@johhnyringolevio "Bluesman" is gigging in South America this week, I am sitting in until he returns. Please don't use obscene language on U Tube, it's not wanted. As? far as "The Bluesman" goes, he is a remarkably talented musician, one of the best in the world but may be a bit judgemental for most folks. I personally think he should stay off of this site. Johnny "Buck Teeth" Lang is loosing his spark. Just doesn't have the drive he used to. It's evident that he does not have the talent to "mellow" it out. He needs to play loud w the effects at full? register or he will expose the flaws. Definately not a Clapton or an Albert Lee type if you know what I mean, respect your elders and age before beauty! I would love to challenge him to a "fist jam" but doubt he has the balls. "The Bluesman"

Buddy came 3 times to Quebec during my youth and blew me away each time. Thanks to the wireless system, Buddy could walk around the Club during long solos and he even went all the way back in the washrooms and? peed while playing "Konck on wood"! I just had to go to Legends in Chicago. Went there in the early 90's. Best ribs I ever ate was at Legends!
