Let the individual buyers beware, not the collective usurpers in the government. The government is nothing more but a giant corporation with the force of law. It is anti-competitive with all other corporations and when you remove competition you? remove the incentive to make the corporations better. At least rather than one giant corporation, i.e. the government, you have many corporations whose long term survival depends upon getting sustenance from the free market -which keeps them honest.

And yes I do think it would be easier for farmers to protect themselves under less regulation because they wont have to be harrassed by the monopoly of the state. There are some states in this country? that ban the sale of unpasteurized milk, even though this form of milk is far healthier for you than the typical Darigold factory farm product. If an outbreak occurs and people start? to die in a certain region, and the one constant in those is that they all ate Monsanto GMO foods, then Monsanto will immediately need to either clean up its act and prove it to the public or go out of business. Lets just pick an easy one: labeling GMOs. Do you think it will be easier for citizen's to make Monsanto right GMO on all the foods that are genetically engineered? Do you think it will be easier for the farmers to protect themselves from Monsanto with LESS regulation? Yes, the government isn't working, but deregulation won't be better.

I agree. Governments can easily legislate prosperity, all they have to do is set the min.? wage to $30/hr, and then make all importation of goods illegal so that nobody can outsource jobs. Essentially capitalism is just a system where assets are owned by individuals/groups of people and these asets can only be transferred between individuals when there is mutual agreement. It becomes difficult when things such as second hand smoke are? involved, because by smoking you are invading people's lungs without their permission. Similarly, the environmental effects of your consumption aren't always captured and so you can't agree a price with people you affect. This is market failure.

Capitalism doesn't necessarily require anything. If consumers decide they don't want to consume more than they currently do, then as long as the population stays constant, then GDP? will remain constant. In fact, if part of that consumption is derived from goods that don't need replacing each year, then GDP would actually shrink. On the other hand, you could pursue endless growth, and if that's what the producers and the consumers agree then that's going to occur. 'Capitalism' is indifferent.

Yes, this all is true for the capitalism of Adam Smith. BUT we do not have Adam Smith's capatalism. 1) Profits are not always reinvested in the company. 2) There is no transparency. 3) There is not enough cncurrention. I started working at 16, went to a community college for 2 years, parents saved and I saved. I then went to a public 4 year school for 2 years. I took 2 years off after that; 1.5 years of full time/overtime work. Now, heading to medical school where I will be taking 6,000 a year of INSTITUTIONAL LOANS (NOT GOVERNMENT) a year. I am a Chinese student. China's every problem can be really complicted. During Mao's period, the state did assign everybody's job, but today, after 30 years of Deng Xiao Ping's economic reform, the situation has changed a lot. In theory, people can go to market to find jobs they like(but many young people? can' find jobs after they get a degree from college due to China's freaky economic system). Rrefute that: earning money in a free society means that you are doing good. It is so because if you took resources and worked with them and sold fruits? of your labour and earned a profit - this profit means that your work added value to the economy because it is valued by it more than resources that you used. If you turn out to loose money in the proces it means that you destroyed wealth - you took resources from economy and turn it into something that is valued less by it.

USSR - couldn't choose where will you be working. Full emplyment, everything done by government, restrictions on travelling( in the beggining before whole country was equalized), whatever your education (or lack of) was you were assigned to work here. Yes, the derivatives market dwarfs the universe, but the housing bubble? was not a blip because it was founded on top of actual wealth, production, and income, not pure counterfeiting--which is what most of the derivatives market is. Actually, I'm an economist :). For a start, to have a discussion about the fallacy of Milton Friedman, you would have to know how to write his name properly. Secondly, of course most economists may be wrong, but at least they have any legitimacy to speak.
