If all the baby turtles survived, they would quickly consume all the vegitation in the ocean. Although many would automatically blame the free market, the problem is not enough free market. The hardest countries in the world in which to set up a business is Africa. There are countless rules and it takes a long time, not to mention you have to be on good terms with the ruler and pay him off big time. So no companies go there. Without more companies, there is? no competition for labor, so companies can pay very little for it. If they had to compete to get labor, they'd have to raise wages.

Of course child labor is undesirable (to say the least), but you have to be realistic. The parents in those countries don't make their kids work because they are cruel or don't love their kids. It's called poverty. You have 3 options: (1) have your kid not eat; (2) have your kid work in a factory or mine; or (3) have your kid be a prostitute and drug hustler. After countries started boycotting products manufactured through child labor,? that's what the kids turned to after being laid off.

May as well figure out what a misery their lives will be their whole life. As it is, Americans actually get to have a childhood now, of course they don't have families or relationships, but as Americans their lives will be filled with struggling to? survive, poverty, slave wages and work places that will also dictate what you do at home. I really think that it is cruel to give children hope of a chance to thrive and make it in this country, they should already know that they are doomed.

There's a difference between working on a family? farm and what Gingrich is advocating. I worked too when I was 12. I mowed lawns and had a paper route. Gingrich is saying that kids should be taking what were previously union jobs that are not appropriate for kids and doing those instead.

Gingrich has to be one of the biggest morons in the world. The reason we have child laws like this is to protect children. There is a reason they were introduced, but like most republicans - his personal agenda comes before history and? the lessons learned by previous generations. Child workers are easily turned into slaves, mistreated, underpaid, working in squalid conditions because they cannot stick up for themselves against a full grown male or female employer. No work is not overrated. Kids have to know responsibility and work ethic. It's not "killing their souls" it's teaching them how to appreciate what they have by realizing what it takes to "get things." Money& objects don't just fall out of trees. I'm not saying they need to have 40 hour week jobs, but some kind of responsibility. And, the? main thing I don't like about this child labor law is how it's going to affect farm kids. We LOVE to work& it's pathetic how they are trying to take it away.

Disappointing. I wanted to learn something. I thought, maybe, just maybe, I might be compelled to forego buying my favorite chocolate this year for Halloween IF their message about child labor were persuasive enough. Hell, Newt doesn't even consider Our Own Labor, OUR investment into the cumulative wealth of America, to be a commodity we can sell, collectively, at a price WE demand. We didn't have the car that Newt and Ron Paul and Ron Reagan and all their chickenhawk buddies snivelled about, that we were "spending our money on gas, video games, partying and concert tickets". As for working in the house, people have to do that to maintain? their OWN Property.
