It wasn't really a black box. Not like the black boxes that are on civilian aircraft. It wasn't designed to survive reentry. It's only by dumb luck? that it went through the rest of reentry and landed in such a way that it was basically undamaged. This video isn't even from the OEX, it was stored on a magnetic tape, like a cassette, that was found by the side of a road. The end of the tape was burned away which is where this video ends, the shuttle and the crew survived for a few more minutes.

Oh, I don't know why you removed your comment. Anyways, I was only talking about MANNED space exploration. Satellites don't require people to put into orbit. And yes, I agree with you. We should keep researching and maybe we'll see a breakthrough. But the Moon, Mars, etc are not being colonized because 1) There's no resources worth taking from them? and 2) Life in outer space is hard to maintain for long periods of time. Humans couldn't survive for long on the Moon or Mars.

As of now, it is useless. We can't even colonize the moon, much less anything in our solar system. We haven't discovered anything remotely close to us that's habitable or worth colonizing. Even, it faster-than-light travel was possible (which it may be in the? future), it would still take hundreds if not thousands of years to arrive. Because like all shuttle flights, if the vehicle is hit on the way up or on orbit, the crew is notified. Columbia was notified but nothing was found on orbit.? No one knew there was a hole. Nasa suspected damage and maybe didnt try hard enough to find it, but the crew could'nt find any either. The crew makes the final call on de-orbiting.

In the 80's Shuttle seemed like Shuttle was right out of a Scifi show and looked great on TV. I only wished it lived up to its promise of low cost. It was promised to be be 50 million p/flight and we would have 50 launches per year. It ended up costing 1.6 Billion per flight over 32 times more that promised. ? Shame on US citizens for letting it continue after the 5th flight. Some people even called Shuttle a welfare program. Privatization of Space vehicles will help costs in the future.

I'd say it had more to do with most video back then being stored in analogue on magnetic tape which loses a lot of quality. Film is/was? much better.... just look at some of the films from middle of last century that have been released on Blu-Ray and look almost as good as a modern day film quality wise (some with "digital enhancement/remastering").

Would you two shut up please? Going to space is dangerous? no matter how you do it. Might as well do it in style. No rocket is anywhere near as awe inspiring as a shuttle launch. I've seen both and can attest to it. Past that, when you are out there designing the next space vehicle, then people might listen and care about what you say.

(they have not had the 135th flight yet). The Shuttle's complexity makes it also the most dangerous manned vehicle in history. SRB,s should never be used with people and we were? warned by Von Braun not to use SRB's. The lack of an escape system is not good. The position of crew cabin parallel with the main tank is not good. A winged shaped craft is not an ideal shape in re-entry. Basically, landing like an airplane in the 20 seconds of flight is not worth the cost.

2/134 is not a bad record for a satellite delivery system. However, 2/134 is really really bad when people are involved (in this case 14 deaths). I realize Russia had some deaths in the back in 1967 and 1971when developing a new system.? Also the Russian deaths by a ventilation valve and parachute failure, not by a major hardware design failure like shuttle and certainly nothing past 1972.

I remember when this happened. The shuttle broke apart on reentry over North East Texas where I'm from. Although I did not hear it, so many people did...........including my parents. Most of the debri fell in? the town of Nacogdoches, TX. However you could hear the boom and see the shuttle racing thru the sky all of over North East, TX. I was 4 years old when the Challenger Explosion happened. I remember watching it on t.v. (live) with my mom. It was very sad.

@taillebasse1 I have to say that I resent your comments. Columbia Business School (along with most other top-tier b-schools) prides itself in its moral and ethical standing. We (students) are investing a lot of effort, time, and money in our education so that we can be prepared to be entrepreneurial and successful in the business world... Not so that? we can be corrupt and sit on boards. You may be looking to throw blame somewhere for a struggling economy, but CBS is not the right place.

Both routes are common. The application process is a great time to do some self-examination. If you really want a career change then you probably have some compelling reasons for the new direction. Don't be afraid to be honest in? your application and state those reasons with confidence. If you're a consultant, but found that the financial analysis part of the job is what really interested you, then it's okay to say your goal is to be an investment banker.
