Take a look at the definition of socialism, you will find that non of the socialist states in history, China, Soviet union, North Korea, DDR and all the others, are or were by no meas remotely like the systems first envisioned. If you look around the world today? you will find that the systems that comes closest, is the scandinavian wellfare models, and all of them are on the top 20 countries with the least curruption and black markeds. By distributor and producer you mean a productive capitalist and a merchant capitalist? Yes this is different than the labor-capital relation which is an exploitative one. Retail "mark ups"? are seen as part of the cost-price of production- that is, getting commodities to market is part of the cost of production. But there is no profit made from merely transferring the commodity from one capitalist to the next. The profit can only come from labor in the production process.

The real culprit responsible for the slavery which is debt and which is created by capitalism, is media? and advertising. Without artificially creating a demand, our consumer society would simply revert to its original balanced subsistence mode. Advertisers spend so much money on commercials because it works! Business puts prices on things. People decided whether or not they are willing to pay the price or not. Some do, some do not. It depends on the individual's income, time preference, needs, wants, etc. If something is not selling at a certain price, the entrepreneur lowers his prices to attract more business. Just as physics ended and was replaced by 'theoretical? physics' - which is just mathematics drenched in reification - the labor theory of value developed in all classical economics by people like Locke, Smith, Ricardo et al. was absolutely leading to Marx's inevitable conclusion - and so the 'theory of the margins' or 'subjective theory of value' was introduced in its stead. If you increase output without increasing labor time (via? mechanization) you are not creating more value, just more output for the same value. If this lets you increase sales by outselling competitors this is only because you are appropriating value in exchange, not creating more value (see vid on socially necessary labor time). In the aggregate all firms can't use this strategy to increase profits. End result= long term fall in rate of profit.

Who cares if the total cost to surplus value increases if it allows me to increase sale? If I sell 100 units with 10$ profit I make 1000$, but if I can sell 10,000 units with just 1$ profit I make 10,000$. But I guess you're saying that ones competitors apply the same cheap production techniques the effects? of price wars and market saturation will tamper output and profit and ultimately create a worse situation.

Their was a great differences between the solution of the early 20s and the late 20s. In the early 20s it was reductions in government that prevented a routine slowdown from becoming ? a huge depression. From 1925 onwards we have the government playing an increasing role, first under Hoover and then Roosevelt that really started the insanity of the 30s. Earlier commenters who have said the problem is that there will always be assholes don't offer an historical viewpoint and of course do not point to a solution. For example, America had plenty of assholes in its? economy in the 1950s and 1960s, but the economy then was more stable and the income distribution was much more even. Let the individual buyers beware, not the? collective usurpers in the government. The government is nothing more but a giant corporation with the force of law. It is anti-competitive with all other corporations and when you remove competition you remove the incentive to make the corporations better. At least rather than one giant corporation, i.e. the government, you have many corporations whose long term survival depends upon getting sustenance from the free market -which keeps them honest.

And yes I do think it would be easier for farmers to protect themselves under less regulation because they wont have to be harrassed by the monopoly of the state. There are some states? in this country that ban the sale of unpasteurized milk, even though this form of milk is far healthier for you than the typical Darigold factory farm product. If an outbreak occurs and people start to die in a certain region, and the one constant in those is that they all ate Monsanto GMO foods, then Monsanto will immediately need to either clean up its act and prove it to the public or go out of business. good video, appreciate the info I'd add three more things 1. Emergency First Aid Kit, and if you can get them, pain killers and antibiotics 2. Battery-operated radios, flashlights, and lanterns? and a 3-month supply of batteries 3. Non perishable consumables, like toilet paper and no-name detergents (who needs fabric sheets?) tried to figure out a substitute for toilet paper since the price is going up and couldn't come up with anything that wouldn't jack up my plumbing.

Harvey is an ageing academic protecting his pension, he admits as much himself, but I don't think that takes away from any interest he might have in Marx's analysis of Capital. To be fair to Meltzer his privileged position will undoubtedly give him a great deal of insight into the worlds current situation but he's a financier and will push his beliefs to the bitter end.?
