Slave ownership is a limitation of personal liberty. Pre-Civil War conservatives believed that it was their right to own other human beings. If I own someone, doesn't that limit their personal liberty? Post war conservatives moved? away from Lincoln's party. Post-Civil War conservatives (then Democrats) attempted to limit the freedom of their former slaves, which is also an affront against the personal liberties of African Americans. Post-Civil Rights act, conservatives became Republicans again.

This happened similarily in Canada. Brian Mulroney's Progressive-Conservative government left a HUGE deficit in the early 90s. The Liberal Party came to power in 1993 and they were able to turn that into a surplus and get out of debt. Then enter Stephen Harper's Conservative government. The democrats took contol in 2006 and the huge deficits didn't stop in 2009. All 3 of the years after have deficits that were more than 3 times higher than the deficits during the Bush years.

Now as far as the legitimacey of the? studies, we know what a pack of liars and bribe takers the National Academies of Sciences and the Royal Society of Medicine are. I will be pro labeling as soon as we have reason to think there is a legitimate health risk. People tend to forget products are extensively tested before they go on the market in the first place. Even on "ban GMO now" type sites, the quotes from scientists are cautious (like scientists are, "nothings certain") but hardly damning.

I agree that patents/copyrights are not a good thing. I don't believe in them at all on anything. Now, the problem with labeling GMO is that it is a break from historical FDA policy on GRAS products. That if it hasn't been shown to be dangerous, it doesn't need a label. Now to label everything would cost money (both to? the companies and the government monitoring the products) and the extra price tag gets passed on to us. As they pose no health risk, this seems like a bad deal for me personally.

When religious interest groups try to get a warning label that "Evolution is just a theory" put inside biology textbooks, at face value it seems harmless. What's wrong with teaching both sides?
