Did you read an authorized Biography? You should read `Steps in Time` that was written by Fred Astaire himself...there he explains a lot about his relationship with Ginger. Also she wears short dresses too, if you wacth Swing Time and The Barkleys of? Broadway you`ll see Ginger dancin`with short dresses and there was nothing wrong with her feet. Wacth a video called: "Fred Astaire - Lifetime Achievement" and pay attention in what he says about Ginger. continue

After reading his biographies - I watch these differently. I guess he felt trapped in his relationship with Ginger Rogers - and her long dresses were to cover up? her 'sloppy feet'... believe it or not. He said at different times in his life that Barry Chase - who he discovered as an understudy in one of the films... was one of the finest dancers he ever paired with. He also said that about Rita Hayworth... he was NOT a big fan of Ginger Rogers. - for a bunch of reasons.

So it's being played to Audrey, the song is sung by Fred (her former romantic interest in a film), and the song is all about the *face*. Ha ha. Plus, Audrey's face IS delightful and wonderful, so it's just a perfect song to describe her anyway.
