Those are indeed the facts. You're assuming GDP? is a measure of economic health - it's not. GDP=consumption+investment+govt spending+(exports?imports). Govt spending takes away from the private sector which creates real wealth. A war for example can boost GDP but the population suffers horribly so the higher GDP doesn't reflect real economic reality, e.g. FDR's rationing, gold theft, internment camps, spending, war, etc. - a bad time economically yet an improving GDP.

I don't know why all the comments seem to think this is some sort of history lesson. I think obama is trying to analogue our fiscal situation to another similar one so reinforce the strategy that he thinks(whether right or wrong) will help us out of the situation we are in. The quote here was that FDR was "pretty fiscally conservative" not that he was "fiscally conservative". Being a conservative relates to ideals, not necessarily actions. Actually, reading? up on it, UK and Germany are having serious issues with poverty. They even have 1 euro jobs and its leaving many even more dependent on the state. But germany has strong unions and if you have a job that is in one you have a binding agreement with the company to a good wage. So in many ways economically germany is doing good, but many of its people arent seeing it because its doing good off of cheap labor. Of course that means a rise in social programs to cope.

this doesn't relate to trickle-up reaganomics at all. in reality the rich save and cement up their holdings for security, on things like yacht? collections and exotic vacations, the money doesn't trickle down at all. Where-as when low income people get money, they don't have the luxury to save or spend it abroad, they spend it immediately into the US economy where it produces US jobs and more energy and liquidity in the markets.

I work as an accountant and I agree that in the bigger scheme of things the tax code is impoosible to work with and bad for business.? So even if the taxes were the same the fair tax would be a much better system. I also am supporting Huckabee although it looks like a tough fight and if it comes down to Romeny and McCain McCain at least may consider having Huckabee as vice President although it isn't over yet. There's probably not a politician on the planet that can claim spending didn't increase during his time in office. Every new budget has to account for? inflation, cost of living, etc. But what politicians can do is cut the rate of growth so that its growth doesn't out-resource its available funds. That's what Huckabee did. He ended up with a multi-million dollar surplus at the end of his term. Percentage rates on taxes remained the same.
