Steven, I actually saw it the other way. To me, it seems like Nicholson's character embodies non-conformist thinking whereas it seems like the liberal indoctrination would be more akin to the rules society needs to keep people in line and afraid. Once they almost were. Dec and his squad were flying air support on D-Day but Al and his friends were? grounded on "Führer´s Orders" for that wretch insisted on D-Day being a hoax. By the way: Only two Luftwaffe pilots (I can´t remember their names right now) attacked the landing zones and almost got court-martialed. My German grandpa was shot down four times and three times wounded, my Irish one was never shot down but once wounded so badly they almost retired him. Have a nice day!

Oh, they had their share of wartime stories. My German grandpa (Major Alfred König 11.09.1913 - 30.01.1996) claimed 49 victories but only 27 were credited to him but I don´t know what accolades he got (I think he was even considered for the Knight´s Cross). My Irish Grandpa (Wing Commander Declan Uldridge? 27.02.1923 - 17.09.1992) for the RAF sent down 31 Luftwaffe planes that were credited for a lousy 9 2/5 "kills". my dad has the original book. fantastic reading, and his story tells the life? of a young german flying for what was then, a just cause, for a better life. what transpires is different, as history tells. but the book is wonderful to read. losing his friends in battle, the war turning tide, and the eventual battle for survival. respect to you Heinz Knocke, a true knight of the air. i. for one, am glad you survived it.
