I've tried to tell young Kenyans that it's time? to go back to farming. Kenya's farmers despite the loud complaints are the new millionaires. Go to RV and see for yourself. Don't be fooled by the ingorance of fashion my friends. these guys drive huge SUVs and make good money many of them without any higher education. These young men and women btw, have not thirst for education but a thirst for employment and thus for a money and a living. It will only get worse though.

one thing I disagree with in this video (but it's a major point): Glenn says colleges will have to start cutting costs to get tuition rates down. I'm not so sure, bc that would presume that rising *costs* of educating college students are what is driving tuition inflation. that's definitely not the case. the cost of educating a student has remained largely unchanged. the fed govt inflating the tuition bubble with cheap loans? is the driver of tuition prices.

Sounds like you've overeducated yourself but at the same time underqualified yourself for the real workforce. South Korean 25 year olds working in video game strategy positions in Seoul won't need to have had such a stifling amount of education. In Australia there are now so many graduates that some organisations only take people? with Masters Degrees. A friend started at a government department through his special skills and he was the only non Masters holder. Some of the people starting on his intake had PhD's. And this is for a basic govt. office job in the 'graduate' stream where they're basically answering the phones and working on the Ministers' projects. We're overeducated, it's futile.

Costly as college is, people need to stop treating it like some kind of human necessity. The reason most people want a college degree is not because its needed to perform their job, but because it? gives them a leg up on someone who doesn't have one. The only reason so many businesses will only hire people with college degrees is the fact that so many people have them today. I continue to wonder as to why this subject is not more often addressed. College costs are out of control, tenured professors making $150+K annually + benefits, "teach" 1 to 2? classes per semester (with graduate-student help of course). Yet, few seem to care. As an Arlington County, VA resident, (where our public school teachers make in excess of $70K per yr on average, (per school year), somebody needs to draw a line in the sand, and say "no mas". The cost is killing, & the education poor.

I think the main thing is, people need to develop the ability to have an "alternate" or "fallback" profession; for instance, I had a friend who loved both IT and working on cars ... and he decided to get trained up? in both fields. And as it happens, he started an independent IT consultancy after working at (and making a lot of money) a car repair garage. These days, you have to develop as many skills as you possibly can, so you can be flexible in the job market.

Unfortunately, it's a Catch-22 situation. Even administrative jobs? often require a college degree these days. Employers will hire a 22-year-old kid with a college degree and no experience over a 40-something person with no college education but 20+ years of experience. It's so depressing. Nobody hires secretaries anymore? Hm, I guess I should go lay down and die, since that has been my employment experience. I gave up watching after that comment. How demoralizing.

I have to disagree with her on one point. Psychology is not an easy major. I was a psych major. In my opinion, an education major is the easiest. I remeber walking across campus with my 36 page term paper which compared the different types? of remediation for Dyslexia and explored new ideas in teaching Dyslexic kids. I watch as education majors walked by carrying posters depicting how they would decorate the bulletin boards in their class rooms. THAT WAS THEIR TERM PAPER! That was ridiculous.

Being a college grad myself there are a few things not addressed here. One being what happens to the market when there are so many degrees out there? I? am having trouble finding work (even with a computer science degree) because there are so many others. Another is colleges that have low standards of acceptance. These colleges almost give out degree like it was a prize in a cracker jack box. The school got the money but the diploma is pretty much worthless or have an insufficient skill set.

I guess when government tries to use other people's money to help poor? people afford education to move up in the world, it also pulls middle class people down. I live in a diverse community, but EVERYONE gets money for college, but it doesn't help us get jobs because everyone else has college too.
