Hitchcok is one of my favorite filmmakers ever.He's great.I enjoyed the films done by Christopher Nolan whom is also a great filmmaker.Every good filmmaker has their own style of greatness.Not everyone can be a winner at the Academy Awards then again,not everyone can even be? nominated either.

I agree 100 % I think that his advantage was that he? came from a time where people read books. To hear him talk about a movie is as interesting as the movie itself. I can't say that about any director I have ever seen . Nolan ,Spielberg, Scorcese , Kubrick, Cohen brothers, Walt Disney either. I apreciate that about him.

I'm a graduate of the UCLA film department and a member of the Writers Guild of America. Hitchcock did not make "decent' films, he created an entire film language that directors like DePalma, Carpenter, and countless others chase. There's a reason he's, "The Master of Suspense."

If you produced something - something that still earns you money, would you give it away for nothing? There are a lot of "ordinary" people (not fat capitalists or overpaid actors) who depend for their income on the sale of DVDs etc. Movies on Youtube reduce that income. In a way, you're right, there is mystery in suspense, but it is possible to have no suspense in mystery. For instance, working out the 'w' questions of a scene (who, what, where, why etc) is not emotive alone, but when these directly effect the emotional stakes towards the character, that's when it become suspense. Hitch is distinguishing the two to cease the common confusion that? mystery alone is as emotionally effective as suspense. I'd love to know what you think!

I think a lot of people, and artists in particular, can find a lot of value and truth in Hitchcock's definition of happiness, even if yours? differs. I love his explanation and can easily jump on board with that definition. BTW, anyone else find themselves wanting to speed up the clip in anticipation of his answer? His slow drawn out speaking style requires some disciplined patience. I keep wanting to finish his sentences for him. lol Truly a great man... one of a kind! Thanks for posting this!

This? is terrific, it really sums up why Hitchcock and his work is so great. For a guy some people think of as kinda dark and dour, namely with many of his most well known films being thriller and horror, its great to have him talking about what being happy is for him, and its being creative and making masterful films. If the writers create a frightening scenerio where the audience observe random people dying but in the comfort of their own home and theater then will most likely have a emotioanl response to it. Those edge of your seat situations is meant to create an emotional response and not just watching random people die. that's not an emotional response to the loss of a character. that's an emotional response to the situation. You're not feeling a loss of the character, you're imagining yourself dying that way. There is no artistry there. Not everyone places themselves in the shoes? of the random people that killed on screen. They are just cannon fodder. If you place yourself in their shoes, that's not something the movie is doing. That's something you're doing.

The reason that it has an effect is because I can easily put myself in their shoes and say "Christ that could have be me." Characters that the audience knows nothing about can? act as a blank slate where the audience can relate to that person in any way they see fit.

Miles looked great; almost like Liz when she sported a ponytail. Benny's score did not get into the scenes as much as it might have (the old posters sequence for one). I guessed halfway through that Vera was more like the spider and the house was her web but the actual ending caught me by surprise. So many of these hour shows seem like inflated half-hours with bits to increase the time (dancing, singing, repetition of events). I bet this could be? done as atmospherically in 22mts. I really suggest reading the short story "The Birds". It has a better setting than it does in the movie. It takes place in cold, windy, rainy England but in? the story the main character (a farmer, I believe) comments that it is colder than usual after "a cold wind from the East rolled in and stayed" which suggests that the Soviet Union might be responsible but never says. Really better atmosphere than fun-and-sun California.

Hitch!!! You gotta? love those lugubrious tones in their description of fear and suspicion and of course he was the master of re creating these emotions on film. With the limitations of what they could actually show back then throughout Hitch's career as a director its amazing, not just that his methods were effective, but that they still are and indeed films in the genre of vertigo and North by Northwest are classics that are still masterpieces. @Audi0Phil You have to understand that Hitchcock pioneered so many stylistic aspects of suspense films, many of which are now standard, and which I guarantee you take for granted (i.e. Psycho is essentially a slasher film, long before such a term even existed), not to mention all the innovation he made with editing techniques and storytelling. i found it fascinating. listen as the slow normal sounds dominate as the sounds of a busy city day.... it then starts a slow, steady rise (as does a roller coaster) to reach climactic torment and horror. truly a great job and fascinating use of montage.? notice the peak which hits at moment 2:02 in the clip. i have lived near a rt. 202 off and on since 1989, and it is dark... like a conduit to evil...
