I? use clear hoses rated for temperature and pressure. You can find them at the hardware store on a roll or in a coil. I bought a few hose connectors with barbed ends and secured with hose clamps.

Hi joe thanks for this video. It has been so much help now that im switching to all grain. I have aquired 2 kegs and a mash tun. Working on getting setup like yours. I was going to? ask how you have your mash tun and boil kettle hooked up to the pump. Is there anyway you might be able to do a viedo on your brew setup alittle more indepth?? The mash tun has a slotted copper manifold, and this keeps the grain husks and particles out of the boil pot. I let the grains cool overnight, and then just dump them in into a garbage bag and put it in the? trash.

I kind of cobbled it together with fittings and tubing.? Essentially, it is a tube inside a tube: the inner tubing moves the wort from the boil pot to the fermenter, and the outer tube passes cold water over the inner tube in the opposite direction.

I normally use tap water, unless it is a very light beer, in which? case I'll use those 5 gallon bottled water jugs you get at the supermarket. Reason: my water is chlorinated, and the flavor sometimes comes through on lighter beers.

1.) I'm interested in maybe starting something like this. I LOVE micro beer, my local liquor store carries a dumb? amount of different varieties. I love trying new beers. So my questions for you is: Hows the finished product? Does it really stand up to micro beer i can buy? Is it cost effective? The beers i buy at the liquor store vary from $1.89 to over $4.00 a bottle depending on what you buying. How much roughly does it cost per bottle when you do it yourself?

At the beginning of the video, he said he started with 3 gallons of water. This is most likely because most pots cannot accommodate more than 5 gallons of water. During the 1 hour boil, somewhere around a gallon will evaporate. What's left? is called the concentrated wort, which needs to be diluted before fermenting so the fermentables and hops to balance out amongst the total 5 gallons. The wort/water ratio is not as important as the right amount of ingredients during the boil.

I don't think your ice will last long in your bucket. As 212 degree? heat is exchanged, your ice is going to melt and get warn. But if you keep adding ice or snow, it could work in theory. A counterflow chiller, however, is something you could use if you have the right equipment. There is also mini-chillers out there that you put in buckets of ice to get the water as cold as you can before it goes into either the immersion or counterflow chiller. This chills your beer much quicker.

Has anyone tried to cool down the wort using the immersion wort chiller in? an "inverse" way: This is having the chiller in a bucket of ice and making the wort go throughout the coil. Makes more sense to me and saves lots of water. Would that work the same?

My? local home brew store has Brewers Best kits. I have tried the Summer Ale- good, Octoberfest- awesome, Pumpkin Ale- good, Weizenbier- good, and I have a Holiday Ale in my secondary. Thanks again Criag!? I did an American Crwam Ale while we were in Texas last year and as they say I used the Texas Water. While is suppose to impart a great tatse. Yeah it did. Great video. My beer which was devised by San Antonio Home brew on Saint Marys Bvrd was great. I have not had a bad beer that Todd has on the kit list ! I wish he had internet but he is a really laid back guy! Not 100% sure about the fancy Coopers range, but with all your standard white Coopers tins it's just an ale yeast. I'd recommend leaving it at 18c for a few days before worrying. The end? result will be a less fruity, more earthy beer. When I used a proper lager yeast, it took 3 days at 12c before any head came up.

I wash mine with just water usually, but every so often I use just the smallest amount of dish soap to get rid of? any oils which are also bad for head. Use something simple, not with all those hand softening agents and such. Cheap dish soap. I avoid soap usually but every so often I have to use it. The head problem most likely is the beers fault more than the glass or soap, but we all have the same problem.

Well,? the second answer might help with the first. I used the Coopers yeast that came with the kit, and it suggested 21C, but went on to say that as low as 13C would be ok. Knowing that most people don't have proper lagering conditions, Coopers formulates the yeasts so that they can still perform well at higher temps. I think that folks should do what the company that makes the yeast suggests.

I have two quick questions: Why do you ferment your lagers at high temperatures? And what kind? of yeast did you use? I did it once when I was new in the game, and it ended up tasting like a watered-out lager with vodka. (Best description i have for the taste :-p) Now I ferment all my lagers at 9-10 degrees celcius, and let them ferment over 4 weeks. Then I let the beer have a diacetyl rest at 3 days. :-)

Here we brew a Brewer's Best Holiday Ale. This kit came with tuns of malt extract and grains. Looks like it's going to be a pretty big beer. I tasted a sample a week into the fermentation and it was very interesting, but not done yet. I will post the tasting video as a response to this video when it's done.

Its not really a must do type of thing. But if you have a good amount of steeping grains in the bag and you don't mix them before putting in the bag you might end up "extracting" an uneven amount flavor and color. Mean you could have lets say 8 oz of crystal 20L all sitting in the middle? of grain bag with other grains around it, and because of this you might not get the full potential of those grains in the middle of the bag.

Hey great video Craig,I noticed you had some slight issue with focusing at one point and assuming you where using your Canon camera for this I've noticed with my Canon Vixia when you want bring? something in close and get it to focus you have to pretty much fill the frame with your subject and it does work much better. I do find that with partial boils that the hop flavours get overpowered by the? malts. I'd be tempted to split all the ingredients in two and boil twice. Although that does take much longer.

Hey Craig, I mash in a bucket like yours and it works fine. It wont overflow just keep your measure to about 1 liter per lb and you'll be fine. Take your time sparging. A couple of tips though warm it up first by putting water about 20 f over your desired dough in temp. It will lose about 10 f warming? the mash tun then another 10 f after you add the grain. Also I insulated mine with a towel strapped on and then chuck a coat over top for good measure. Looks ghetto but does the job!

I think you're gonna have? some problems using a bucket as a mash tun. A 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler will usually lose between 2-7 degrees F temperature in an hour. I would imagine that bucket will lose 15 or more in that time. Make sure you insulate it as much as possible during your mash. Also, i hope you have a good barley crusher for that grain. Good luck.

Craig, did you considered doing BIAB (like for 3 or? 5 gal batch)? As all grain brewing? It's super easy, more convenient than using for mashing false screen/bottom, less time consuming and cleaning efforts. You can do batch sparge or NOT = just skip sparging! Because you'd mash in higher water to grains ratio. It's really, really easy :) You can have about 80% efficiency with that method too. If you feel cool with partial mashing, BIAB will be easey peasey for you :)

I would add 1 US pound of crystal malt, but not more than that. Try toasting 1pound of the 2row(before crushing) in the oven at 350F for about 30minutes. It will turn more golden, but not black, adding a nice toasty? note

I would probably have the bar glass madness too, but I have to use glasses that'll fit in the cup holders in my theater chairs. So pint glasses mostly. And I just picked up some English pub glasses from Amazon, such a good deal. A dozen heavy, pub quality Italian glasses shipped to my door for $34! They're stack-able too, which is nice when I have a party and am carrying them upstairs afterward? to the dishwasher.

Sorry I wasn't there in the cast when that happened Craig buddy for support,I'm glad to see that a group of great people came together to help you out.? About the Starsan I just poured an old batch out from being in my bottle for about 3 to 4 months and I don't even think it was cloudy at all! Does Starsan not claim to be an acid based sanitizer? I fail to see how some cloudiness could negate the effects when the strips are showing an acidic ph. Maybe it will just have to be one of those hard learned lessons but so far the masses are saying that the cloudiness hasn't been a factor for effectiveness. Emptying? your keg i would be heart broken, Cant you build in your basement a unit you can sit your kegg in and slot your pump into a holder so its like a bar but still easy to take it out and move it around like you do now could be a slot or quick release bolts ect.. or you could make a keggerator and keezer combined would be intertesting dont think anyone has done that, while no fermenting is being done could be a keggerator anyways 17 from the uk sorry i dont catch you fridays working

why do we all want to do allgrain and brew like the pros but when we buy shop bought brewed by them we call the shitty lol As for starsan never used it but i use my vwp sanitiser twice to clean my equipment on brew? day and to clear my lines and sanitise my kegg ready to be filled which can be up to one week after brew day i dont get any problems only ever had one bad taste in my beer which because i never washed my kegg out anough and vwp has a horrible taste to it unlike starsan no rinse :)

Having just returned from west Germany, I would say the? stein is designed to make the beers better as the ale in Germany, contrary to popular belief, is pretty crap. Even the brewery's make beers that could be easily replicated by the most novice of brewers. Unfortunate really as we had high hopes for the trip, but just saying.

Thanks for the reply Craig, I have a mini fridge with a temp control, the maximum being 5C (41F). I brewed the lager at? around 15C (59F). John Palmer recommends that the lagering phase should roughly be 10f less than the brewing temp so I don't think I'll be too far out here, obviously the colder your fridge the longer the lagering phase will take. I saw the video you posted reviewing peihomebrewer's Euro Lager a while back now, how did your brew compare to his? Cheers

Hi Craig, I too? am brewing the Coopers European Lager kit right now and I'm just thinking about how I'm going to do the 'lagering' process next week. I've been told you can either put the beer into bottles and chill them in the fridge for a couple of months or chill a carboy down then transfer it to whatever storage vessel you wish after the lagering is complete. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you can get the carboy for a good price. I personally don't? like glass carboys because they get real heavy and if you drop them they make a HUGE mess and can be dangerous (espicially? if you have pets or children around). With that said if you decide to get the glass carboy use some PBW and a carboy cleaner with warm/hot water and let it sit for a day or two and it will come out sparkling clean.

because beer has a LOT a calories in it and by god I'm beginning to feel it. each beer has about 200-350 calories in them. each. so if you had a nice night of drinking some pretty epic beer and drank? 6 in a night, bam. 1500 calories (conservative estimate). fun fact: you can also use malta to make your starter. from what I hear, its og is at abut 1.06. combine and water it down until? its close to 1.04 and I've heard that it works perfectly. side note: is it ok to use a Mississippi mud jug to hold my starter? and would a spritz from my steam blaster sanatize my tin foil properly? that's kinda my stigmatization method of choice ^^

I make starters just like you do, but after two days I decant the wort and add another 2 cups of fresh wort to the yeast cake and put back on my spin? plate for another two days. I dont really use a pitching calculator. If its a big beer meaning something around 1.080 or high I will usuall pitch 2 liters worth and have never had an issue. I usually make the starter the day before so it has 12+ hours to ferment which? is more then enough time. I try to pitch younger yeast just so they are more viable.

I would wait 2 days, and stir it vigorously several times to get rid of any CO2. You can add icinglass and it will clear in a few days. Getting rid of the CO2 is very important or it won't clear with the icinglass.?

hi Craig nice videos i am just getting in to makeing some apple cider. i was lucky to get given some LEFFORT X5 yeast by a inporter ( i work at auckland int airport as a freight forwarder ) now this yeast is for making a? chardonnay. aromatic but dry and i want to make a sweet and sparkling cider so i cant kill off the yeast. i was told by the homebrew shop that i could use artificial sweetener with a teaspoon of suger when i bottle the cider to make is sweet and sparking. what do you think ?

How about doing this to your beer before kegging it? Not adding extra flavor. But just killing the yeast. So the beer is 100% chrystal clear, before you keg it. Then you can shake and do whatever you want with the keg, and it will last 4 ever. Cheeper than filtering the beer. Is the extra chamicals OK to drink in a big amount??

Thanks Craig! I haven't had any issues with just using potassium sorbate alone... from qhat I've read the difference id the potassium sorbate prevents the yeast from reproducing thus eventually killing it off and will also prevent new yeast being? introduced from reproducing. With potassium sorbate I waited 7 days before adding any juice to the mix. Nice fart in the bloopers.... yeah it sucks getting old.... but farting is better than blowing a colon......LMAO!! (not that is even possible cheers
