It makes sense in both Chinese and Japanese (but as someone who knows both- I'd say it's more Chinese ;3) In Chinese, the characters read tiao he, which would mean harmonious. While in Japanese it would read cho wa / chuu? wa (same really XD)- kanji wise- and it would mean harmonization... like the one you use for singing XD I hope this helps ^^

ooooooo I see!!! I agree with the mascara being hard to take off, I have to wear waterproof mascara otherwise it won't hold my curls. I've recently started using Pond's Cold Cream to take off my makeup and eye makeup and so far, it's been amazing. It works wonders and the best part is that you don't have to wash it off (I still wash my face after though because Pond's Cold cream feels thick on my face. So, check that out when you're ready for? mascara!

Here in Malaysia traditions still going strong, thanks God for that. In fact Malaysian celebrated every races traditions together. There will be a special day , where friends? and families from different races were invited and there will be a feast. This tradition started by the Malay communities called "open house" during the celebration of eidul fitri and the other races follow suit. It is an enjoyable get together and it's been done everywhere including at the offices.

Here in Sydney the traditions are slowly dying away. I have noticed, particularly, that holidays that have been fervently celebrated in the past like Christmas has died down... It may be due to religious culture, but Im sure it has more to do with the fact that people have little disposable income to spend now :( Being half chinese and half filipino? (and thus catholic)...living in Australia, i get to experience festivals but...yeah, chinese + korean culture even here is dying out somwhat

Alright, I know this is in no way related to this conversation, but I have to say it: I LOVE YOUR HAIR. I mean, you rock that haircut, and your hair is so silky :O) Concerning holidays, I am from Canada, and we also have? Thanksgiving, and it is on the second Monday of October. It's a tradition now, but less and less people seem to care. In older times, women used to spend days cooking turkeys, potatoes, gravy, and the families would meet up.. Still, in my lifetime, I've only done it once.

I can give you a tip:? the sound is uvular, which means it comes from the upper area of the throat, and not the tongue. For some good practice, try saying the word Paris with a French accent. We? have bank holidays in the UK. Pancake day's coming up but we still work so I don't know that it counts. I know that certain people don't do pancake day. Some people have pretty depressing Christmases in this country. I have a friend who's Granddad died,but then his family didn't do Christmas. At all. Also some people just spend it on their own then wrap things up and unwrap them.

hmm i think you mixed up the usage part of the lunar calendar... We dont follow it everyday but we still use it to decide which day we hold our wedding or to celebrate lunar new year, this are the major uses of the calanedar, there? are still alot of minor uses of the calendar. I think you know seolnal is equal to china's chinese new year right? so its impossible to ask 1/6 of the world population (china, not counting other chinese in other? countries) to stop or forget celebrating lunar new year. Its the roots of china and chinese are really proud of china so i think you wont likely see them throwing away lunar new year.

Well, in France we still have lots of days "off" (jours fériés) where we don't work, days which are actually Christian traditional celebrations like for instance la Toussaint, but most of us don't really take that day off because of its real meaning but more because it's a habit and an" excuse"for not working . Well I think we tend to lose the real meaning of days like these and we see? an opportunity to take vacation.

More and more it seems like its harder to get days off at work, and we don't have any mandatory holidays in either my job or my parents? job. At one point there was never a holiday when any family members worked, so we maintained our traditions, (quick side note, in America there seems to be more individual family tradition rather then a national tradition) But now we often have work on holidays that cause us to bypass our usual festivities.

oh well italy is the country of Christianity, and wher the pope lives [ok it's not actually italy, but it's in our country so lol] and Xmas and Easter are still really important in our tradition, but it's also true people are using these days to have a vacation somewhere else, not spending it with their familiy as it was once. Festivities are more? important to elders here too.. students are usually just happy with the fact they dont have to go to school :P

yeah, travelling during chinese new year has been the trend since airfares started becoming affordable. mothers everywhere used to prepare for reunion gathering meal days ahead for their sons, daughters,? grandchildren to come home to eat on new year eve. it's extremely tiring, with heaps of work to do. nowadays, people would rather pay to eat at restaurants than getting their hands dirty. i'm a conventionalist. nothing beats my mum's fab home-cooked food! may traditions live on!

lunar calendar is still used to observe traditional chinese? festivals, and also to decide on auspicious days to do something important. yes, most people now use western calendar to celebrate birthdays. only the older generation may celebrate on their lunar birthday.

Seolnal will probably go away? at some point, because the Gregorian calender has been accepted by every country around the world, and the Chinese calender is flawed and no longer used as much, except as you said, by older generations, but in another 30 years it's likely you won't see any Asian countries celebrating the Lunar New Year. It's a holdover from ancient agricultural traditions that are almost dead.

yea we don't see that trend happening in the States...especially not with thanksgiving....thankgiving and christmas are too big lol. Smaller holidays like St. Patricks Day and Valentine's Day and Labor Day and Independence day....i? think the only one that stands a chance of getting nixed is Labor Day lol. all the others would probably stay...forever haha.

I live in Mexico so we have a lot of traditions that we can? proudly call ours, one which is my favorite is "El dia de muertos" a very antique and unique celebration but just as you say is slowly fading away, there aren't as many people putting on the altars anymore and it has become something that you do in school but just not anymore in your house or cemetery like it use to.

I've found ready made Kimchi, sesame oil and seeds in one of my local Smith's. I keep reading this cookbook over and over and wishing? part 2: The next day I went to a bookstore and found a Korean cookbook: Eating Korean by Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee, I just love this book. It's not just? recipes but has a lot of her family photos and memories from her life. And a lot of info about Korean holiday traditions and so on and what kind of food you prepare. I live in Gothenburg and it really is impossible for me to purchase Korean ingredients. I've looked everywhere and even searched the internet for some kind of gochujang recipe or substitute, but with no luck. Korean food has made me motivated to learn to cook for the first time in my life, and it would be lovely to do so with proper ingredients.
