The problem with the director is that? he says Shatner's read needs to have more "excitement in the beginning." That's BAD direction because it's VAGUE. He's not conveying to the talent exactly what he wants from him. Unworkable! So, if it's to be more "exciting," WHY? Throw him a bone! You have to delineate the motivation for the excitement and that emotion must be within context and reason. But, you also have to trust the actor to perform and leave him room to creatively interpret his role.
