Can you make good money in this field? I am about to be a 2nd semester freshman soon and I was thinking about switching? into Computer and Information Technology with a focus on CIS. I know managers make a lot of money but what if you're not a manager? Are you stuck making 35,000 a year? or can you make 80+ regardless?

my cousin started out with a job for a drug company as an IT and his beginning salary was 35,000 a year right out of college. But in one year they doubled his salary to 70,000 and it is now 5 years later he is making 157,000 a year and has currently been home doing nothing for 2 and half? weeks now because they don't need him at this moment but is still getting paid. I'm pretty sure i can say that he has the luckiest job in the world...

By: genieva3. on 11 Jan 11, 23:17:30
I'm currently in school for CIS and have to decide on a concentration soon. Any ideas? Web design sounds like fun, but I like all aspects of computers and? really can't decide.

My first IT job was a web administrator at my school. I then quickly did freelancing for about 3 months, didn't like it. With the recession, I was actually out of work for like 2 months. Then I got two job offers, one for system administration/programming. The other in data? management which is what I chose because it paid better. (26$/hr to 18 lolz). I don't think help-desk will really get you anywhere. Networking pays well, so does database admin, and software development.

hello, im currently at the university of houston and? just finished basics after being a music major for about a year. i want to get into IT im confused as to where to go from there, i thought about getting a help desk job to? gain some experience but a little confused about what education? i should be getting as far as a degree is concerned. how did you start?
By: hairlesheep. on 03 Dec 10, 23:10:06
:D thanx?
By: rdxxxx. on 03 Dec 10, 02:46:18
Computer Engineering is more difficult and a niche field in my opinion. Systems management is managing IT hardware/software where as CE is designing/programming hardware/chips. It all depends on what you? wanna do man. I'm a data management analyst . Its not the most perfect job, but on the bright side, I get to work with a bunch of cute nurses :>
By: hairlesheep. on 02 Dec 10, 01:52:59
what do you think is better. Computer Hardware engineering or computer systems analyst? I am more into the main hands on with a computer and I really dont? mind the salary although a little bit ^.^
By: rdxxxx. on 23 Oct 10, 16:14:09
And with any job, you have to? know people and have connections. If you're going to send a resume online along with thousands of other people , then its a much more difficult process.
By: rdxxxx. on 23 Oct 10, 16:10:14
The problem with networking imo is that you have to go through certifications. For job requirements, ALONG with a bachelors degree, companies look for certs like CCNA, MCSE etc. Finding a job in network administration isn't that hard. I got some interviews out of college from small businesses for NA, but they just didn't pay that much. Plus I didn't feel like studying for a cert every 3years or so which some require. CAREFULLY research the certification and its worth before you? invest time in it
By: WhatTheTech. on 19 Oct 10, 05:52:54
I hear? its hard to break into networking, is that true?
By: rdxxxx. on 17 Oct 10, 05:24:19
My STARTING salaryis 46,000. Granted, this is with less than 1 year of experience. If you are computer science, I think? you start at 50,000. Computer engineers/other engineer 55,000 - 60,000 depending on the company. So its not a bad starting salary. In 5 years when I finish my masters, I am expecting to make 90,000k per year. There are TWO routes you can goto in IS. Either programming or networking and from there you can work your way to being a manager. Msg me if u have any questions.
By: thompsoncorey. on 30 Sep 10, 23:01:33
yeah around 54,000 a year but go for your bachelors degree instead making around 75,000 a? year.
