No, pal, it's YOU who miss the point. How many shares of stock did "the government" buy? And, no, it's not "the government's money", it's MY money....and yours, and my neighbors, etc. Indiana and Dekalb County have received MORE in taxes paid by SDI than the value of any abatements they gave to SDI 20 years ago. And, they have? received 100's of times more than they would've received if the land that is now SDI had remained farmland.

The federal government "invested" more than $54 million in SDI? How many shares do they own today (or did they own at any point in time)? I have no problem with ANTONE who invests in ANY company making money on their investment. That's WHY they do it. In the case of SDI, they made that money because the company was worth many? times more when they sold the stock than when they bought it.

I think current land ownership should be more like a lease from the public with royalties going to every citizen. We all essentially rent from the whole. I agree that *if* more debt is added (that is isn't paid off) it leaves the tax-payer on the hook, but all business of everykind has such risk if someone borrows (even starting a restaurant for example).
