I was lucky to have seen my first Mountain concert early in 1970 before the drugs took over. You could actually hear Steve Knight playing well before the volume went over the top. In the early days they were loud but really balanced. One of the best bands I have ever seen. Pity that drugs messed up everything for them and the? fans.

If you've never been? thru strip mining areas, it's a real shocker. It looks like something you would imagine on Mars or the Moon. I've lived in NE TN all my life, and they have their sites on these mountains for strip-mining. It cannot be reclaimed, and it's said the spirits in the mountains are killed when the mountain is gone. But big money doesn't care about the lives and traditions that have endured here since the 1700s. We're just in the way and don't matter.

I've had generations of coal miners in my family. Hell, they helped fight for the UMWA. They were at bloody Matewan and The Battle of Blair Mountain..and much more. I'm all for keeping the coal industry alive, but I Do Not condone strip mining and neither does my? family. Without even going into the damage that it does to the mountains, it employs only a few men for a very short period of time, unlike underground mining.

Coming from a family of Coal? Miners going back four generations in SW Virginia/NE Tennessee, I can say that they've got the life pegged here. I'll? say Godsmack's cover definitely isn't as good, but it;s not terrible by any means. Godsack did a really good job with Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times as well. Probably even better than their cover of this song. The only thing Godsmack is missing would be Joe Walsh. The way he sings and plays guitar is on a whole other level than Godsmack. Godsmack's biggest problem is their original music. They show more talent in their covers than they do in their own songs. Feels like a waste.

Helped move my Grandma out of her mountain house in Virginia this past summer. She couldn't keep up with the payments and lost her job after keeping it 10 years after her husband (my grandfather) died. I grew up in that home and this song? was one which my family all cherished because it reminded us of the gift which we had. I haven't listened to this song which Steve Earle wrote and Levon Helm so beautifully covered and it warms my heart. RIP Levon and thank you for your wonderful spirit.
