The current system is quite simple. Every dollar borrowed to pay off the? debt, fund public services has a certain amount of interest attached to it, so theoretically as long as the current system continues it is impossible to get rid of national debt. The only way to solve the problem would be for governments to create their own interest free currency (greenbacks). But I really don't see that happening.

Oops. 1 billion, or 1,000,000,000 single dollars times .0043 inches in thickness per dollar is 4,300,000 inches. 4,300,000 inches would be 358,333 feet, which is 67.87 miles. The argument looks so much nicer when you stack simple one dollar bills, which people can relate to better then $1,000 bills. I've never seen a $1,000 bill before in real life, that's for sure.

The math on the stacked billion dollars is WAY off. 1 bill = 0.0043 inches $1 billion = 1 million $1,000 bills 1 million bills * 0.0043 inches per bill = 4300 inches = 358.3 feet = 0.068 miles = less than one third of the empire? state building. Too bad your attempt at education falls for the same trick used by every administration since Nixon. ? Specifically, that is by lumping in the amount of Social Security taxes taken into the calculation. During Clinton, Social Security took in way more than it paid out, and this "extra" amount was added into the totals, rather than being kept separate. Take SS out, and you see nothing but deficit spending for the last 40+ years.

That means that if there is 1000 dollars in circulation, the national debt would be 1000 dollars plus some 'level' of interest,? say 5% = 1005 dollars owed. If you add on the borrowing for public spending then it gets worse. Have a look at Bill Still's channel, it explains things really well. Also, look at the fractional reserve system - all very interesting.

The labeling on your chart of national debt as a percentage of GDP is grossly misleading. It shows Obama's name spanning the totality of the past decade making it look incorrectly like the spike belongs on Obama's tab. Only if you look closely at the x-axis labels do see that only the tiny snippet at? the end above the line is on Obama's watch. All the rest belongs to Bush2. I hope that wasn't intentional.

Your chart clear shows that the national debt as a percentage of GDP rose? from ~32% to ~65% in the Reagan/Bush era, dropped back down to to ~58% under Clinton, and skyrocketed up to ~85% under Bush2. If anything can be concluded from this, it is that electing Republican Presidents is dangerous to our fiscal health.

This is not the debt and interest problem that the US is facing...is it? As I understand it, FRB allows banks to make loans to people, not the government, and since actual dollars are not being made, it does not contribute to inflation... I think. Ok, thats a simple explanation, but government spending has not increased under Obama, the problem is the economey is not producing enough income to maintain the current programs, so to continue the current spending levels, the debt ends up being larger...in other words, the stores income has decreased, but the liabilities remain the same,or have increased.. so those who are eligible for unemployment, due to the current situation? have grown, have grown in numbers... The debt is bigger under Obama than it was under Bush, true, but MOST of that debt that's being held up in media as Obama's debt, is really debt Bush built and passed on to Obama, that it's been a decade since the US was nearly in the black. The? percentages here represent the INCREASE in Debt. NOT the debt total. Obama's debt total is higher, but most of it was passed on to him by Bush.

The credit rating thing was kinda a joke because we do not borrow from banks we borrow from countries like Japan, Saudi, China... they write the rates each time.. I keep saying you want shit to change? then get those fuckers out in congress and stop worrying so damn much about the pres..

You got it right about politicians with common sense. I would have to say the most of them don't have any common sense. The real sad thing about that is you can't learn it from a? book.I have seen guys with all kinds of college degrees (real book smarts) and don't have enough common sense to blow hot soup.

Good points there! I could really get on a roll here especially the welfare deal? and public schools. The bottom line is we don't need government involved with anything other than military, public safety and emergency services and highway systems. Move the rest of the money into private enterprises to take care of everything else. Guess hell will freeze over first.

I give up trying to keep up with what is going on. I read in the news today that the US is now EXPORTING oil because we have a surplus and domestic demand is declining. So much for the law of supply and? demand in a free market to dictate prices. I almost punched a hole in my monitor. I'm just going to move Idaho and live in the woods.
