Also just an example. My uncle was about to have his shipping company "out sourced", the whole company over to china! The union helped save 1000s of american jobs. He still? had to take a pay cut among other stuff. But if he wasnt unionized he would have lost his job of 15+ years!

I think you have the wrong outlook on unions man. My brother works for a union and im applying through a union. They help get decent fair wages and offer insurance and other benefits. To me they seem like they have a positive role in most communities. Any respectable union wouldnt have? shown this kind of behavior i must admit. Maybe they were a small and "bad union"?

I have 11 years experience fighting a union operating a business in a residential neighbourhood on a conditional license. After a complaint by a neighbor due to a breach of their conditions this union began targeting the elderly woman and her family with vandalism, tresspass of their property,? intimidation tactics, set ups, slandering them throughout the neighborhood, harassing phone calls, stalking, death threats, etc. They walk, talk, act as a criminal gang and I treat them as such.

Hmmm, not sure I would agree with abolishing or forcefully disbanding some of them though, that's way too Nazi for me. We could revoke all the freebies they get through the law though. We could tax them and treat them like the corporations they truly are. Their power comes from legislation or being thugs, nothing else. We could stop? giving union members tax deductions on their union dues, etc. Plenty of ways to weaken unions without going as far as making some or all of them illegal.

The reason that our corporations are hurt by global competition? is that the current labor and environmental restrictions make it impossible to offer the product at a competitive price. There was a time and a place for labor unions, but the pedulum has swung too far in that direction. I know that alot of people hate the evil corporations and that nasty word "profit," but without the company, there is no job. Poor people don't create jobs.

It'd be nice if Unions were more generally known by the public as moving to get more people employed. The only thing I ever hear about Unions nowadays is their attempts to increase benefits and wages for existing workers, so? I don't even know if attempting to decrease unemployment is even a goal of current Unions. I think it should be though; I really hate not being able to view myself as a productive member of society.

The kind of dire poverty upon? which your arguments rest does not exist on a sufficient scale in this country (or in many developing countries) to produce the legions of disconnected peons you assume for a baseline. Email is 40-year-old technology. It was pioneered on 1970s-era minicomputers using slow dial-up modems. In 2012, low-end PCs with onboard LAN and WiFi can be got in big-box stores for $200-300. Taft-Hartley neutered the unions and transformed them into appendages of the corporate state. I have zero respect for modern unions insofar as they are slavishly compliant with that Act. If unions in the U.S. started behaving like their predecessors of the 1890s through 1930s, employing direct and effective action to induce capital to negotiate on *equal* terms with labor, then I might be persuaded to support them. Its still concerning that, without right-to-work legislation, unions have the same leverage over workers as they do over businesses. I consider unions a necessary evil. If the government protected workers rights as well as it protected corporate rights we wouldn't need unions. A union doesn't have to actively bring NEW benefits - its main function actually is to keep the employer from taking away the EXISTING ones. I've had the questionable pleasure of working for a company that had gotten rid of anything even remotely union-like, and with the only obstacle out? of their way they were pretty eager to quickly turn us into highly productive slaves. A union already is useful just by simply being there (though working on new benfits of course is a plus :D).

Sadly, while the more honourable organisers of unions would love to offer their service for free, it takes quite a bit of money to keep such an organisation going. It starts small with having to pay for pamphlets being printed in order to get the latest news out to people and? ends (or, rather, doesn't even end) with paying lawyers a small fortune for legal assistance. Having fewer people pay their membership lowers the scope within which the union can operate to help their members.

I have felt that way many times in the past however and later realized that there was some sort of government involvement or that I was missing some key piece of information. I'm hoping it turned out to be a bad business move and they ended up losing money on the deal thereby teaching all other car companies in the future that it's a bad idea.

it's easier today to live off one one salary than it was in the 1950's. We just want more shit today. The Average house is like twice as big now, we usually have 2 cars instead of sharing? the one, that sort of thing. And unions do work out great for people in them, but most people aren't in unions. There's nothing wrong with workers banding together, but when they get special treatment from the government it negatively effects everyone else. Unions ended child labor? lmfao
