The song was a big hit in England by Lonnie donegan (poss no 1) not Johnny Horton he used the phrase "Blooming British" while Horton's version was changed to "rebels" I don't know about the BBC ban but I seem to remember Lonnie on TV. I saw these guys twice - once in Chicago opening for ZZ Top, not their best venue - and then again down in Peoria, at a high school footbal field - perfect. At that show they were talking to the front row - someone screamed for "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and Johnny Cash actually turned to Kris K. and asked if they could do it,. Steve Goodman was one of the most amazing talents ever. He was a hell of a musician. Every year we'd see him play at the Philly folk festival and he was beloved and respected by every performer on the stage, from Doc Watson to Dave Bromberg. And of course? by how many covers there are of this song you know how they loved his music. This clip brings a tear to my eye, we lost him way, way too young.

Thanks for this. This is how I remember Stevie. I have only one regret: that Steve never released a recording of the ORIGINAL version, without? Arlo's change in the bridge, adding the "D" chord. I have been performing this song as he originally wrote it, but have had to give in to "popular convention", so I include the change in the last bridge. And, to see Stevie, in his bibs and with all his hair, looking like the picture of health at that time.

To Imissthepostoffice- Many also. Will investigate the AG interview. I 've been reflecting a little on why I liked Steve's rendition so much. I guess it's the? same as many others feel. It's just absolutely natural, not at all manufactured, a personal record of the sounds and feelings evoked by the train ride, sung straight from the heart. As mentioned ,so fresh and young. I close my eyes and my imagination takes me there as well, -riding on the City of New Orleans along with Steve. Wonderful.

To defoecrusoe ~ Thank you dearly for your comment. There's an Arlo Guthrie YT interview about? how Arlo first met Steve here in Chicago. Check it out, if you are interested. It is quite awesome indeed. I don't think that everyone in the States knows of SG, but you can see that he is certainly a favorite here, in his native Chicagoland area. He sang a lot of songs that dealt with our local issues here, from politics to baseball.

Always thought the song was? fantastic, but have only just seen this clip. I'm ashamed of my ignorance - I always thought it to have been written by Arlo Guthrie and had never heard of Steve Goodman until now (so sorry to all you guys in the States), but so glad to be able to pay tribute to Steve for the wonderful rendition. Quite clearly THE definitive version. What a great shame he died so young, but the song is great legacy for people to listen to, admire, and enjoy. I'll spread the word!!

I saw Led Zeppelin in New Orleans at the Municipal Auditorium in the summer? of 1972. After a fantastic show and a couple of encores, they closed with this song, "New Orleans". The crowd loved it. Not the original lead singer,? surely? The rest of it is as ever - the smoothest pop single I ever heard. They really hit their straps in this immortal hit!! The guitars, the lyrics, the harmonies, drums the works. Sad about the croaky lead singer however.
