From what I've read, that seems like a lot of DME to add to your brew. Will it not effect color/taste?? Don't get me wrong, I know, you know what your doing. I'm just seeking some form of clarification on the matter. Also, why can't we just steep some of the grain we're going to use for brew day and use that for the starter? It would have same taste, color, etc.

North American pilsner malt has very high diastatic power. The issue I see is how he sets up his mash.? You do need to mix first, so you might want to mix in something insulated and heated, then pour into his tun. And, this can set up a step infusion mash system as well. Some vorlaufing should be needed, but not long.

Depends on several factors (health of yeast after previous fermentation, storage conditions, strain, etc.) so there's no absolute answer. You can get a good read on the yeast by looking at the color, dead yeast is much darker than viable yeast. As the slurry turns light brown, it becomes less viable. I suggest to ALWAYS pitch an? aged yeast cake to a starter (say, 1L) to be sure there's enough viability. Happy Brewing!

Try adding Amylase enzyme powder to the mash, maybe you pilsner? malt just wasn't malted well and doesn't have enough enzymes. You could also try a 90 minute mash with the pilsner to give the fewer enzymes more time to work.

Thanks for the suggestion. With my last batch, I tried doing a second sparge as per a thread on the NB forum. Sure enough, the efficiency jumped to the mid-70s. ? However, and I'm not sure why this would be, I have looked at the past several batches and realized that my worst efficiencies come when I'm using Pilsner malt as the base. Maybe the sack I bought is a dud? Just an observation, no good explanation for why a type of malt may not convert as well as expected.

I get 70% efficiency with a cooler setup like that except. I use? a bazooka screen (no false bottom or manifold), but the trick is to split the sparge water in half and sparge twice. So at 1/2 gal per lb of grain, I will put 1 quart per lb in first, STIR, collect. Then put in another 1 quart per lb, stir again and collect. Before I started using this method I would only get 62-63% efficiency. It might work for your setup too.

Yeah, that's what I do. I have the JSP Maltmill. It has the factory preset rollers. I run my grains through 2 times....Much much much better! There's a saying, Crush until you're scared." This means crush it as fine as you can, without the threat of a stuck mash that? is. I find that 2 times through the mill is perfect!

I clean the valves by running boiling water thru them after I finish the brew and then I blow out everything dry with an air compressor. Every other brew session I run a PBW or Oxyclean solution thru? the system then rinse and dry.

Thank you for sharing your ideas this is a really great home made setup. I made a cordless drill mill; not nearly as fast but fast enough. I use a kitchen towel with clothe pins to direct the grain in the bucket. I am intrigued with the valve configuration though.? Try brew in a bag one of these days this is fun too.

Braggot is a mead made with malt and honey, the malt makes it somewhat similar to beer or ale. To be called braggot not less than half of the fermantable sugars should come from honey, thus putting it in the mead category. However alot of beer brewers make a similar brew that probably more appropriately would be called honey beer or honey ale because they? may use a lesser amount of honey and include hops. There are some that would argue that a true braggot should not contain hops.

No Sparge Batch

I tried my 1st "no sparge" brew day. I used only the 1st runnings from the grains to make my 1st batch of beer. I sparged the sugars from the grains but used those sugars to make a lighter colored second batch of beer. I added some DME to the second batch, and treated the 2nd batch like a mini-mash.

Check out john palmers guide, he covers? a lot of different methods for everything. You can view his online book by going on google and searching for howtobrew, it is THE source for home brewing, and if you haven't read it, which im guessing you havent having not seen this method before, its worth a read. Great video though, much enjoyed it, better than quite a few i've seen. How did those beers turn out?

Im not sure, after 1 hour boil on both batches the first runnings was 1.07 for the 1st batch (yield approx 5 gal) and the second runnings after adding approx 2 lbs of DME was 1.06 (yield about 5.5 gal). I don't remember the water volumes. You should try google searching "partigyle" the common term is "partigyle brewing"? and there is a fair amount of info out there on the web that would be helpful to you.

I loose 1-2 degrees fahrenheit/hour (winter or summer...Denver, CO) Works well enough for my needs for a 1-2 hour mash. I am sure there would be slightly less heat loss if I used a cooler, but I prefer stainless because of ease of cleaning, durability, and they can be heated directly. Argument for a cooler is better constant temp, argument against it they are made of plastic, don't? last forever, can NOT be heated directly.

I use a free brewing recipe program from powersbrewery com that does a fairly good job at predicting color, gravity, IBUs, etc. You may want to check it out, I have found it to? be very helpful. There are other free programs out there that I have used as well, they all get fairly close. What grains did you use to make your American Pale Ale, did it have too much color?

My APA came out looking like your IPA =\. I'm sure it will taste good, but I'm really disappointed? with the color. I'm rather new to AG, so mistakes like this are inevitable and I should expect them to an extent I guess. On a happy note, I bet both your IPA and APA came out great, they look really good. Cheers!

Siphoning is even better than what I do? if you are willing to put in the time. Better still, do a whirlpool of the wort after it is chilled and let settle for 15 min. The trub will settle in the bottom/center. Siphon from the top at and edge, and lower the tube down. You will be getting cleaner wort. However, studies have been done to show this makes perhaps a non-detectable difference, but some people still prefer starting this way.

I like how you used the pitcher to move the wort into the carboy. I started pouring the whole wort from the kettle into the fermenter, but I actually recently took to using my autosiphon and just racked it in,? which worked pretty good.

I have? not used that kind of material, but it could probably work. I know people use copper in mash tuns. If you can get a good filter so the wort can run out while the husks stay in the mash tun, then it should do the trick. Good luck.

Thanks for this video Don. I first watched it about 6 months ago. I am finally going to do it after much procrastination. This saturday is an Avery Ellies Brown ale clone recipe(since you have to mash Munich, I thought it was worth a shot since it is my favorite brown). I made a rubbermaid cylindrical tun with? plumbing parts in about a half hour and it is watertight with no leaks! Cant wait

You can buy? stainless steel brew kettle with a ball valve, hose, and a false bottom. But a cheaper and good way is some people make them out of old kegs by cutting out the top. Then installing the ball valve, hose, and false bottom. Search some more videos on all grain and making a keg into a mash tun. Hope I was of help. Thank you for all the great videos Don.

They sell many stainless steel options with false bottoms and a spigot for draining. These require a constant heat source to maintain your mash temps, due to their lack of insulation. You are looking at? $150 minimum for the mash tun alone. Or you could use a $20 insulated cooler with a $10 mod that will do an almost exact job...

It is typically in the 165ish range, but I use a spreadsheet? to calculate that. (send me a message on YT with your email address and I can email it to you). I usually add water, add grain, stir and mash. then I add "mash out" water which is usually about 8 qts. Then I collect the first runnings. And then I add the sparge water, stir, and collect 2nd runnings. Hope that helps.

I usually use 1.33 ratio and after the mash I drain the kettle... THEN PUT water in... Should I be putting in? water FIRST, then drain... etc... thanx...
