I think there is this misconception from 'some Americans that the USA has rights and freedoms found nowhere else outside their borders. They think that its everyone's dream to move to America because everywhere else is just 2nd rate. From the upcoming Special Edition Ascent: Commemorating Space Shuttle DVD/BluRay by NASA/Glenn a movie from the point of view of the Solid Rocket Booster with sound mixing and enhancement done by the folks at Skywalker Sound. The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound. The Skywalker sound folks just helped bring it out and make it more audible.

Awesome vid! The only thing? that would of made this video better would be a real time altimeter reading. So we can see how fast the craft is climbing along side it's velocity. But it's cool to see that in only a little over 75 seconds the craft was already 28 miles up. That's pretty damn awesome.

Yes, the cone is the fulstrum. No boosters have sunk. When they land, they fill with air. The level of damage is diff. every time. All sections of the SRB are taken apart and refurbished.? Most everything is reused. Water doesnt get in everywhere. Cameras are reused as well. Some sections flew many times but never the whole booster again. Some sections take longer to refurbish than others. And yes some cabling is new every flight. Its very labor intensive.

The parachute lines and? parachutes are wound up on a reel. The fulstrum which separates from the booster to pull out the main chutes lands separatly and is lifted by crane onto the boat. One boat for each booster using tow cables.

I think the only ones ever lost were the ones on Challenger's last flight, and then only because they were deliberately destroyed. Otherwise there's really no reason why one would get lost.? The aerodynamics are very well understood, so the landing is very reliably predictable within a certain elliptical zone.

As a toddler, I really had no trouble relating "er" to /r/ or "el" to /l/. Once you put words in front of them, they sound it out, and if they recognize the word (as in "lion") they learn exactly what /l/ sounds like.? Consonants are not designed to be pronounced by themselves. You are correct, /x/ is either /z/ or /ks/. That is how it is pronounced. Most commonly, it is /ks/, so this is how they should first learn it. Kids might first sound out "fo-eks" but quickly correct to "fox"

I study Linguistics at UCSD, and plan to go into teaching. Also, I was raised with this song!! :D Phonics is such? a rich and complicated field! As children get older and reading becomes more advanced, a move from phonics to complex phonetics, phonemics, and integration with foreign roots will be required. HOWEVER, in the earliest stages of reading, they NEED to relate sounds to letters (phonics). IMHO, this song does just that, beautifully, without conscious effort.

I don't think speech pathology is for reading. Overall your song is good, young children can absorb? a few errors and still figure it out if started early enough (before 5). One reason we have so much trouble with reading is the schools start way too late and drag it out way too long. Children should be reading by three or 4 - they are hard wired to learn it quickly and easily at that age (or younger). But teach q needs a u, ing says "eeng", th, sh, ea "ee, eh" not just individual letter sounds.

When I was a student teacher? my lead teacher taught that xylophone was "ex-ill-a-phone" and this after 30 some years of teaching. Job time doesn't make it right. Obviously the universities are not doing their jobs and in fact, most allow no phonics instruction whatsoever. The dictionaries have reneged on passing on even the correct pronunciation of words. If you say "er ing" for ring u give a 1 syllable word 2 same for "el ion" lion. x does not say "ex" it says z starting or cks elsewhere.

xylaphone starts with the proper sound for x which is z. Words that start with x are few, most are elsewhere and sound like "ks" as in box - it makes more sense to teach the more common sound but if not then at least the correct sound. Also r does not say "er" it says "ruh" as in round and l does not say "el" but "luh" - actually just the first part but for clarity I spelled out the whole syllable. ?
