What an amazing band...Punk is not a musical style but more of an ethos. Television were definitely a punk band....Ive never heard this song before but it fits right in with what they were doing in the 70's....and I agree, Marquee Moon is splendid cover to cover. The guitar work is brilliant..Im? still trying to figure out what they were doing on most of it...and my favorite line from the whole record - "...I fell into the arms...of Venus de Milo."...Fucking brilliant!!

this group? originated the punk rock idea when richard hell was in the band(mclaren got the idea for sex pistols from them)later they became more like this, "normal" sounding but still pretty strange. None of the original NYC punk groups sounded like the cliche of what "punk rock" is today other than the Ramones. Television, Talking heads, blondie, patti smith dont have anything to do with that sound. "punk" was about originalitybefore it became a cliched sound

Yes i get it but the point of the video is also anti-advertising, yet they are using ads to get their point across. There are subliminal techniques where they use this exact style of a flicker of an image to subconsciously implant an idea in your head. aHHHH. The days of hittin any one of 40-50 clubs in NYC, joint lit, nose stuffed with Go Go candy, heading to check out a? band. Saw Television once at the Ritz and then another time at El Mundo/the Love Club on E 2nd. MGMT90 said it-the impetus for the Strokes, but lets' get real. Television was a star studded effort (Eno too! ); they were a more important band than the Strokes, who seem thinly positioned in the minds of older fans, who love and remember the 70's NYC Underground Music scene.

Richard Hell was simply the glittering star of the band, a personality too much above the others, which Verlaine should have accepted just as Mick Jones in the Clash and Steve Jones in the Pistols - aka the main contributors to the bands' sound despite not being the main? attractions. Television would have then continued to be the great "raw" band you can hear in this demo, instead of the weak attempt to repeat it which goes under the name of Marquee Moon :)

I saw Richard Hell live a few times & he's a perfectly solid bass-player. Of course Fred Smith's more technically proficient, but it's no mystery that Hell's exit from Television wasn't just about his bass-playing: there was a clash of egos with Verlaine over different things. Haven't heard this in a long time but? when I did I remember thinking that his bass-playing was fine. If it had really been that bad Brian Eno & Island Records wouldn't have really considered signing them

Richard Hell played bass, sang & wrote some of early Television's best songs, like Blank Generation (he later did it as Richard Hell? & The Voidoids in 1977. 2 albums: Blank Generation & Destiny Street). He and Tom Verlaine went to a private school together, ran away when they were 17, went "on the road" & then to New York to become poets. Hell left Television (first 'modern' Punk Rock band, haircuts, ripped clothes & all) because of ego clashes with Verlaine for the band's leadership

I used to watch about 10 hrs of TV per day. I realised after a while that my brain had turned to mush! Considering I topped my school in mathematics and scored top 1% standardised IQ test, i was surprised that i could no longer even follow the plot of a movie, and didn't even have the mental energy to read a magazine article. Whats worse, the program FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS literally slips? your IQ down 5 points each episode! I now read novels aswell as TV and it has brought my brain back to life

No need to underplay the Strokes' proclivity for great, affecting music craftmanship because you need to praise a cornerstone. Yes this is great stuff and influenced a lot of good concurrent bands. But so did a lot of other bands (the smiths, blondie, velvet underground, etc.); such influences shaped the direction and? means by which a current band like the strokes creates music. When I first listened to MM, I was indifferent. I listened to it maybe three or four time that year. Then one day, for some strange reason, it was a completely new record to my ears, and I listened to it non-stop for weeks. Now I have all their albums and bootlegs as well as all of Tom Verlaine's stuff. Ha ha.? I remember browsing the Television mailing list and a lot of the hardcore fans weren't exactly converts upon first listen either.
