That is the problem with most parent coaches, they worry to much on "where" the ball goes.? What this coach is concentrating on is what she is doing to the ball and getting her to do the same with her own thought process. What you need to understand is that it's what you "do to the ball" that gets the ball to the right spot and until you can control this aspect you don't need to worry about where the ball goes.

I don't think we need to see where the ball goes to learn from this video or see the quality of these shots. And I am not saying the quality? is high. I don't use this method all the time or with every pupil but to show real "super coaching" I should have asked her more questions such as, "how would you like me to feed the next few balls? Harder? Softer? Higher? Wider? The pupil can then help me to push them and find the perfect balance between success and failure.

Dear tommyenglish. yes it does speak for itself. I want to see if she has good percentage? and if she hits deep . We people that watch this video cant know if she hits maby balls out or in . we can guess . Your method is good but you "overuse" it . I think your a good coach, that is why i take the time to reply here. Don't be a coach with an Ego, open your mind a bit .. If you like I can show you videos of my pupils and love to hear comments and corrections .

Please let me know these mistakes I am making? And speaking a lot as an answer is not going to be sufficient. I am clearly not speaking too much. I am asking questions trying to get my pupil involved in her own development. I am training her to think and be able to solve problems on her own and understand what makes her shot work, thus making her feel responsible for? her improvements.

Well this is a huge problem for coaches in America. There isn't any space for? the student to self-discover things for themselves. Questions are a great way to communicate with students. When someone can understand something without being told for the most part it sinks in more. Good video.

I only had a lesson a week but I got my technique very solid because I have a passion for the game and paid attention to everything I saw. The only thing stopping me from being a pro was hard work. A good coach obviously helps but you can be a great? player regardless

@ZawShin for one thing, this video helped my slice A LOT. it got me noticing what went wrong when i shanked my slices and allowed me to start? noticing the small niches in my gameplay. i enjoy every one of tom's uploads and i watch a video of emira hitting before i hit the courts because i think her footwork, form and technique are excellent, no doubt because of an awesome coach. if you think the videos are irrelevant, dont watch them, but they are an inspiration to me so thanks tom!

Hi Ray, If you're talking about how high you should clear the net everyone is different. It all depends on how fast you can generate spin (RPM's). Someone like Nadal (who generates plenty of RPM's)can aim safely over the net and still pull the ball down inside the court before it sails wide. You have to experiment with your game, how much spin (RPM's) are you generating. Obviously, the higher you can aim over the net AND still bring it down in the court the? better. Tom

this is great instruction, drop the rear leg in the preperation, makes such? a difference. For these short angle shots to the service box, I also try to hook round the outside of the ball when whipping up for topspin. Plus a more compact follow-through which ends up below my left armpit, rather than over the left shoulder. Rather like Soderling's style of play. Boosts the RPM of the topspin, just like Tom says.

Hardly any shoulder turn - no synchronisation between the swinging arm and shoulder. This is why his follow through is almost lassooing around his neck! The reason? is that the backswing is too long and he's arming the ball, instead of using the shoulder to generate the swing. He's tugging at the ball because the left hip isn't turning through. Very bad technique!

He needs to stretch threw the hit a little further( stay on the ball longer) thats how you generate more pace and a more solid shot, get him to swing out to his right hand and not cross over the right with the finish of the swing.. is balance is suspect on this side also. get? him to hit of his front leg for a while so then his blance will get better.
