I'm well aware of the incident and how it? happened.These were torpedo boats approaching at a high rate of speed and needed to get within 1000 meters to fire their torpedoes. In such an instace the Maddox fired on the boats before they reached that limit. I would have. And I have never heard anyone argue that doing so was inappropriate. Only the second incident is usually used in the "its a lie" myth. Even the North Vietnamese agree with the attack on the Maddox.

If you were to look up 'casualties of the vietnam war' on Wikipedia, you would see the overwhelming number of civilian deaths can be attributed to the NVA and VC. I might add that a large number of these included torchure? and a sense of brutality that only de sade could have dreamt up. In a perfect world there would be no civilian casualties, and the US did its best during the Vietnam war to keep them to a minimum. The VC and NVA used murder and torchure as policy.

I would argue the fact that police require a? significant amount of training to do their job. Would you equate them to thugs as well? The military does need a significant amount of training if only to instill the discipline required to do their jobs properly. Many many current and former members of the military have said how much they relied on their training when the battle began. I'm not sure your time on neighborhood watch could be equated with military service.

I am not an American.. however I feel so sad for the troops who survived the war and were so shabbily treated by Americans? on their homecoming. It's really depend upon the scenario; if left alone without any US intervention, the North would overwhelm the force in the South as the French pulled out to deal with Algeria. If the US committed only military aid, but still? back the Diem regime like they did the chance is 50/50. We're divided today is not just because of this war, it's had been this way since the Nguyen Trinh Lords war from 1627 to 1775 (Tr?nh Nguy?n phân tranh). The Nguyen lords needed to break away the central power in Th?ng Long (Hà N?i), which was controlled by the Trinh lords, so they formed they own state with? its own culture and dialect. The expansion south was made by them taking Champ and Khmer provinces to create a new country. That was the beginning of South Vietnam (?àng Trong).

McNamara said just before his death that going into Vietnam was a mistake. After all these years veterans from this war was are still dying from suicide, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and a multitude of other diseases associated with war. I should know, I'm a Vietnam combat veteran who worked at a Department of Veterans Affairs regional office for 11.5 yrs. Irregardless of the comments below, as a vet myself, on this? Memorial Day 2012, it's because of the heroics of the men and women who served in this war, that I joined the Army. Though I cannot feel the pain and memories Memorial Day may bring about, I look at you all as heroes I'll never know, but led me into the greatest role I ever played: soldier.

It was a huge testimony as to who the? South Vietnamese supported. And a big loss for Giap. Unfortunately the US media played it as a big loss for the US.

It was the general populace who were the target of the VC and NVA. The general populace? did not support the VC and if and when they did it was at the point of a gun. The Viet Minh targeted the South Vietnamese after the French left and created such a horror show they lost all public support. After the partician those South Vietnamese who went north were trained and equiped by the communist north then returned south to carry on the insugency under a new name. But, often just as brutal.

The US went to help but had to go home because the politicians told them to come home, because the war became very unpopular due to the draft resisters and a very biased media, and the politicians would? have lost votes if the military stayed in Vietnam.
