I have 2 questions, do you have any tips on what to do with your right leg (i go counter clockwise) while doing windmills? it is difficult for me to try to bring that around, if that's what you're even supposed to do with it. Are you left handed? im a righty and i spin the same way you do but i feel like windmills, flares, turtle spins, etc. would be easier with my right hand (to start or for stab position), not my left... i learned, years ago, windmill from the backspin way and i backspin easily using my right leg and spinning left which means i end up using my left hand for stab position... problem is my mills kinda suck (dont practice enuff). im so used to? it tho so should i just stick with it?

Theoretical maximum is only 59.3% (betz limit), 36W left. Minus losses due to drag (20% probably more in this case)= 28W. Minus losses in electric generation (37%) =? 18W. A total loss of about 70% from the power available. 18W (when the wind blows) is what a low energy light bulb needs to burn. So no it would not power your house

It would be really helpful to make a video for what is used to make a magnetic generator for a little wind turbine. I have neodymium magnets and very thin copper wire (about .006 inch diameter), but not having an electronics background, I don't really know the other components, and that would help. Also, there is a two part sculpture compound called Magic Sculpt that you can hand mix and form and it becomes extremely rigid - you might be able to use that to form some of your moving? pieces.

Hi - I'm planning to make a little arty wind project - I thought about the flutter one, and I think you might be? able to make one maybe with a helium balloon on one side and maybe a spring or counterweight on the other side if the flutter turbine just causes a mechanism to back and forth - you could probably get that with a balloon and an opposing force - that might also work pretty well in really low wind areas. Let me know if you think that might work. :)

God, I remember darn near every farm in Nebraska had a windmill in the yard? somewhere. But you know, now you just don't see them hardly anymore.....and I think it's so sad. Electric pumps knocked these things out of society. But...you can still see a ton of them in western Nebraska....especially the sandhills region. Thank God for that!

I'm a Nebraska native living in Arizona. My grandpa and uncles' farms both had Aeromotors. The one on Gramps' farm was right next to the house. As little kid (I'm 57 now) I would get hay fever so? violently, that my heart would beat so fast and hard that I could never fall asleep. Only the sound of that windmill next to my window would allow my body to slowly adjust my heartrate down...and eventually I could finally doze off around 4am or so. That windmill regulated my heartrate.

I'm not even sure, I'd have to ask. The windmill at my grandparent's place was damaged by high winds, and is? now chained to prevent movement. It's rather hard to explain since I don't know the technical terms, but the support ring that held the blades has broken, leaving a semi collapsed windmill that I'd love to see in working order again.

Great to see windmills making a comeback! Here in Australia windmills went through a very similar scenario to the US. Once there were many small manufacturers, now there are only a few. "Southern Cross" from Queensland is probably the most famous and the? longest surviving brand. Windmills drawing water from deep bores allowed beef cattle to be grown in Australia's semi-desert "Outback". Before electricity came to rural areas virtually ever farm had at least one windmill.

This man makes a fine product, but he seems to be stuck? in a retro time warp. He continues with the old machine but could upgrade it's uses to include electrical generation. A slight tweak in the blade design would also create more power but with no additional costs of manufacture. I wish him well, but he also needs to modernize.

Hi, did you ever get a workable response to your question. I knew a guy who made a water wheel of spoons. He charged car batteries with it. He used a voltage regulator and the altanater (?) from a motor cycle. It was a very simple system and he just rotated the batteries as he needed. He powered lights in his cabin and a water pump to get? water to his cabin where he had a tank. Gravity feed into the cabin gave him indoor plumbing! Wish I could remember his system. Well, it wasn't really a? question to begin with. There's a company already building stuff like that commmercially, as seen in this video : /watch?v=5J5njCbTNb8 The alternative would be to put is vertically into the water, sorta like in this video at 1:52 , but into water instead of into air. In that case it's even easier to keep the electronics away from water, since you have an axle you can just stick above the water. This is all old technology.

I believe that you can use the fan as a water Wheel, but you need to protect the windings in your motor and? the bearings too, or else it could seize up and not work anymore.. Also water is very ward on motors, moisture, humidity.. I would be interested if you came up with anything on that.. If you do please share.. Good luck to you!!

Yes, it does indeed make sense to store up energy when the? boat is moored. Its not a bad idea, often talked about, but never fully investigated - the turbines usually mounted aboard boats are tiny! However, I have so far confined my efforts to the "direct drive" method, which is simpler and cheaper, and demonstrates that you can use the power of the wind to go against the wind which some find amazing!

It would probably even better to completely "flatten" (no pitch) the turbine to get? more sail surface in the case of a downwind course. Does it make sense to not use the turbine to power the drive shaft directly (and deal with friction losses) but instead store the gained energy in batteries and use the propeller based on need rather than available energy to propel the boat? I can imagine that it would be nice to anchor when the wind is still good and store energy for later.

Yes, quite correct. A good way of looking at it is that the counterbalance weight on the arm which you see always points towards the wind when going upwind. Downwind rotor power is not really much good because of the deminishing wind over the boat the faster you go downwind. This is? why the boat is driven by drag alone when going downwind with the rotor stopped.

This is a fine and informative website you created. The diagrams show (as I suspected they should) upwind sailing as the rotor perpendicular to the wind while the boat is parallel to the wind. But, unlike suspected, you are not using the rotor? to sail downwind. So, I guess you are sailing directly upwind, for instance, between 0:34 and 0:45. Correct?

Thank you. Based on the turbine position (I cannot see the wind) I only see the boat moving across the wind at the beginning of the video. For *directly* sailing upwind, wouldn't the turbine be positioned the same place than directly downwind (with reversed blade pitch)? Or? were you sit (for same blade pitch)?
